I noticed when looking over southbourne cliffs a working vessel approx a half mile east of boscombe pier with a floating boom at the shore side extending for quite a distance . Its too far from the the (said reef) to be related to any ongoing improvements. Does anybody know the reason for these works? Terry

Got a feeling there going to be putting some sand back on the beach (southbourne end)ph34r.gif

Gary

That means then after a couple of storms...it will get dumped in the Xchurch run / entrance..as it did last time.. as if we havn't got enough sand bars.. mad.gif

Longshore Drift.

Thats why Poole built the new rock groynes at Branksome Chine to try and keep their sand as long as possible. ( Bournemouth just patch and pray)

The Bournemouth Bath Chair Brigade think a Surf Reef will solve everything even Boscombe ??

Then there is the Venturi effect. When the Swash and Middle channels were widened and deepened the flow exiting Poole Harbour was increased by ?

Increasing the flow, increases the suction (Venturi Effect) Hence the new groynes by the Haven Hotel and the loss of beach at Studland.

When I was a lad the East LOOE used to run like the Swash on the ebb (Bass City) but since they widened the Swash Eastwards and removed the bit of Hooksands in front of the Haven Hotel it all goes straight out.

Thanks for answering my query so quick . Call me picky but is it a sheer coincidence that the sand and material we are buying and transporting from the Isle of Wight is the same consistency as on the beach at Southbourne. OR!! after a heavy storm or two does this same sand travel down to the Mudiford entrance and Avon beach and end up from whence it came off the Isle of Wight. In the storms of the 80s I can remember having to walk across sand 10 yards or more from Mudifords wall to cast into the channel. So Bournemouth are having to keep buying this same sand time after time.

As said previously I'm no expert but I'm currently looking to invest in sand dredging companys on the Island. Slimple. Terry laugh.giflaugh.gif

Hi Terry,

Sand samples have been taken from well inside of Xchurch Harbour...nearly at Xchurch Quay ......to be identified as the exact same sand that is being dredged out of Poole and pumped ashore at Southbourne!!

The Dredging company must be biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif ing getting paid to take it out of Poole...and getting paid again to dump it at Southbourne...a win win senario....Shame they can't get a contract to then take the same sand out of Xchurch tongue.gif
