Coddy
Hi all I found this article about how these lip grip weighing scales damage fish. Now I know it is from America but it does make you think Quote: Study Shows Lip-Gripping Devices (Boga Grips) Damaged 80% of Bonefish by Tom Chandler on August 12, 2008 Edited November 25, 2010 by Coddy
Peter
No I don't use one but it is generally considered not to be good practice to hang a large fish vertically just gripping by jaw or gill covers as this leaves the bulk of the fish unsupported when out of water and may lead to damage of internal organs or spine. So cuddle those big fish gently with lots of support!! Peter
Paul J
Good post Dave, It's the same with any tool; in the wrong hands they can cause damage. If used correctly the boga can cause less damage than a net in some cases, It also allows the release of fish at the side of the boat with removing the fish from the water at all. There are plenty of other benefits that are kind to the fish but the point is to be aware of treating fish correctly when they need to be released. Ideally all weighing should be in a sling as hanging any fish on a scale might cause damage to its internal organs. With regards to the survey Any fisherman with half a brain or thought for the fish would never attempt to use a boga on a bonefish so the people surveyed must have been pretty ignorant in my view.
