Paul D
Having got a complete set of catch reports now allows me to do all sorts of weird and wonderful things with the data. For example we can see what the best months for targetting particular species are. Here is an example for Plaice :
great white
That could be very usefull especially to let us know when species tend to start arriving/being reported in numbers. nice one Paul
Paul D
Charlie, Indeed - It is actually very interesting. I will add a few more and will show at next club meeting if I remember to bring my laptop
Paul D
As an example. Cod fishing ..... Is this year the best for years ? - Is it as good as in the past ? The reports indicate that although it is improved it still has some way to go. Average weight of cod caught per year .
Wedger
Interesting one!! ... so long as the reporting is consistant and in context of what else is being caught. You might miss the best whiting fishing report for years because the cod are reported and whiting are not. Also, I get the feeling that many are not reported for various reasons.... ie others have done far better keeping catches to yourself......................etc Still a great idea and well worth the effort! Balanced interpretation. Edited January 24, 2011 by Wedger
Rob
Indeed I agree with Trev and have the same reservations. Whilst it is good to have a few pinches of salt must be taken. Reported fish coudl have been reported more or less in teh good old days. Catches may have only been reported by those at a meeting, now you can be anywhere in the world 24/7 and report. Are we using more rods, have more members, more boats, better treminal tackle? Better fish \ mark \ location equipment? Faster boats that can make more marks in a day? TBH I am not sure we can use this data to a great extent, expect to see what the biggest fish were and how many - as Fishermen never change, it's all about reporting the big one!!! Here is an example for Plaice : Paul......Great showing the trends .........though I do appreciate Trev and Rob reservations too !! But what happened to Feb and Dec on the Plaice graph ?? And ....can we mere mortals do this sort of thing too or is it an Admin thing ?? Dave
Paul D
Agree there are some reservations. However, by taking the average this makes the fact that more members in the club / more reports now as less relevant. ( i.e. The average size is still an average - although, agree if only one fish reported then this does become meaningless. ) Also, I am aware that people wont bother reporting smaller fish possibly ( eg. 7 lb cod ) whereas maybe nowadays they do. ( This means the average is reduced and could be purely down to this ). Interesting looking at the maximum size fish reported as well though ..... ( coming soon ) Also, interesting looking at when fish are caught ( very useful ) and this is definitely showing trends which tell you when to go fishing ( To the extent that future reports which I will generate will be in a club only area. )
great white
It may be interesting to see numbers recorded as well as average size I am sure we would love to return to 1992 average size over 25lb, maybe the members back then did not record fish under 20lb well worth the efforts Paul it all adds to the overall picture
Coddy
I hopefully have attached a graph showing the number of differant species caught over the last two years from the Year Long Boat Species Comp. Might help give suggestions when to get out. I know weather and sea conditions make a differance. Dave
dave007
Thanks for all the hard work in compliing these charts, while I agree that can be some iregularities due to some inaccurate reporting , I think this could be a very usefuil tool to help in catching those illusive fish. Would it be possible to download onto the forum as I am unable to get down to the monthly meetings as probably are others Thanks Dave
