Jsplace Posted April 21, 2011 Report Posted April 21, 2011 Hi all, time to replace the steering cable on the Wench, I have managed to identify the helm as an old Morse Command D290 but am finding the cables are ***** expensive! We have an old mariner 20 that does not use tilt tube steering and am wondering if the Teleflex up to 55hp systems might be a suitable replacement as they are cheaper than the cable for the old helm! Will it be OK seeing as the steering cable pretty much just bolts on to the front of the engine? Are the forces likely to be greater than using tilt tube steering? Link below to the considered system. Link Quote
great white Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 We use D290 on the boats at work, they are very strong units compared to the teleflex. But a 20hp should not strain a teleflex unit designed for up to 55hp you need to get the correct length cable [usually marked near the ends] as you do not want tight turns in it, and you do not want to pay for longer than you need. Hope that helps Charlie Quote
Jsplace Posted April 22, 2011 Author Report Posted April 22, 2011 Thanks Charlie the length is the easy bit ;-) Have emailed a company that manufacture steering cables to order, including their own version of all teleflex stuff. Will hopefully get a price next week after the bank holidays. Further research tells me that its possible to use the Safe-T cables on a D290 with an adapter too. Works out a little cheaper than the D290 cable on its own too and is rated to 150hp. Will let you all know what I find! Will also be joining the club proper soon Quote
