Cockle boat at midnight!!!!!

We are still nervous about our boat security, so we went down to check her on the mooring this evening. We have a night watch at North Haven and they fill out a log. On reading last nights log it transpires that a cockle boat was in the moorings without nav lights at midnight last night. The night watch reported this to the coast guard who in turn notified the Marine Police who in their wisdom turned up not as you would expect by boat but by road. They used a loudhailer to tell the said cockle boat to come in, on the second call the cockle boat throttled up and p**sed off. What a surprise!!!!!

With the amount of thefts that are happening from boats at the moment why are we not seeing more police patrols on the water. These scrotes just seem to be left to get on with helping themselves to what ever they want.

There is no way this git was cockling at midnight in the moorings. We now have security bolts fitted to our remaining gearbox but we are still finding very unsettling.

Colin, I too have seen the cockle boat there at night on 2 occasions. Both times he was actually collecting cockles (or perhaps worn?) albeit just 10 yards out from the wall and with no lights.

I'm guessing he is not allowed to be collecting there hence night and no lights?

Hi Col

I know what you mean about being nervous, some scum bag emptyed the contents of my car on tuesday evening whilst parked on our drive.

On another note we came up christchurch harbour wednesday night about 11 oclock it was pitch black and nearly ran into two black ribs. both loaded with guys dressed in black, it was only when our lights caught a small illuminous patch of blue on their sleeve did we see them.We only got a brief look and then they disappeared into the darkness again.

I dont know who they were but assumed police or army

Its a worry that all the Marine Police cover seems to be further West, ready for an event that starts in 12 months time.

North Haven used to be so secure that the scum bags kept well away, It was a Member there that started the Harbour Watch.

Have they still got the night vision equipment?

Perhaps if its illegal cockling the Sea fishereries should be called if you see it again

The murdering Ba****d in Norway was dressed as a Policeman !

Have you reported it ?

Hit and run from the sea is probably the easiest option left for terrorists and nutters in this country.

It is not illegal to obtain cockles from Poole harbour.

We were talking to the IFCA (ex Sea Fisheries) Officer at a recent PDSAA meeting and they are aware of these people and the problems going on around the harbour.

The price of cockles have risen sharply recently and now worth the trouble to obtain them and they have to come close in at high tide to get them. In fact it seems that the cockle population is very good at the moment and getting better due to the collection of them.

Someone suggested that there was a by-law or similar that all commercial fishing had to be a certain distance away from moorings but this has yet to be confirmed.

Just thought I would pass on a bit of info before people jump to conclusions which could be wrong.

That may be Dave, but the boat I saw was showing no running lights even tho fitted and they obviously had power as I could clearly see the display on their fishfinder.

Seems mighty suspicious to me... also why would they hightail it away from the police if they were doing no wrong?

I also believe that cockle collection is licensed on certain specified beds of which afaik evening hill is not one of them.

I may be completely wrong but to me something seems amiss...

Yes Nige at least 2 have Honda 50's and the cheeky b****rds were dredging only feet from the pontoon at north haven the other day. It's not illegal to dredge in the moorings but it is if they damage them.

Colin when I was out last night after dark I picked up a mooring at l;ast light and made some tea

Not far off was a small trawler pulling his net

amazed to watch this being done at night in the harbour just at the start of the north channel

when you get your new gearbox, why not paint both of them a really loud colour, so that they are so visable they are not worth stealing. Just an idea
