Stuie Posted August 26, 2011 Report Posted August 26, 2011 I'm looking to upgrade Sea Dream's GPS plotter, an old but serviceable Garmin GPS 126. I would like the ability to view detailed charts on screen which I don't have with the Garmin. Several professional skippers have recommended Standard Horizon as being easy to use and good value so I'm looking closely at the CP180. I've also looked at the C-Maps available and presume that the central English Channel chart would be the one to order. I'll be connecting it to the ICom M505 fixed digital radio and looking at the details on both items it looks like this should be no problem. I also think that the external ariel may receive better signals than the internal ariel model. Is it likely that the wiring already installed may connect directly to the new plotter? All comments will be much appreciated. On the WWW Gael Force have them listed at Quote
Coddy Posted August 26, 2011 Report Posted August 26, 2011 From what I have read on other forums the Standard Horizon has good reports and excellent customer care. Re C-Maps I had them in my Navman and found they worked well. I also have the PC reader so I can play around at home on the PC looking at possible fishy spots etc. You will also need a user card if you go along the same lines, so you can transfer way-points and marks from the home PC to plotter. You may well be able to use the C-Map NT+MAX cards which show even more detail! Dave Quote
Stuie Posted August 27, 2011 Author Report Posted August 27, 2011 Thanks for your response Dave, I've just ordered the kit and the relevant C-map max. By user card do you mean a blank memory card to upload onto? Stuart Quote
Wedger Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Can't fault the Standard Horizon + C-Map! Have the middle sized one myself and is proving great value for money as a middle range unit. Quote
Coddy Posted August 28, 2011 Report Posted August 28, 2011 By user card do you mean a blank memory card to upload onto? Stuart Hi Stuart Yes thats the one, I went for the 2Mb user card to make sure I could keep marks, routes & waypoints as a back-up. Dave Quote
Crossy Posted September 1, 2011 Report Posted September 1, 2011 I had the CP180i on my last cuddy boat and loved it, a great little piece of kit. I have just replaced the plotter in my new boat and went for the CP300 and took the Cmap NT Max card from my last boat. I had to contact standard horizon recently and they were fantastic, couldn't fault them. If yours is an open boat (or a thin fibreglass roof) then the internal aerial will be absolutely fine. I get a GPS signal on my iPhone in the cabin of my Merry Fisher. All the best, Andrew Quote
Stuie Posted September 1, 2011 Author Report Posted September 1, 2011 Thanks for your comments Andrew - it arrived today. I went for the external ariel model as the old Garmin it's replacing has one wired in. Stuart Quote
