Can anyone tell me what is good for removing rust stains off of gelcoat. Boblin is in for her free engine service (open prize) next week so while she is out of the water we want to give her a good clean. The rust stains are where the rails are bolted through the fordeck.

Cheers

oxalic acid it comes as powder mix with warm water for best result only way to stop the rust is to passivate and polish the back of the rail baseplates and seal with sikaflex

Found in the purple and orange cillit bang, Grime and lime. It has that acid in it and worked wonders on JoJo.

Colin,

There's a number of oxalic acid and phosphoric acid based gels and creams around too (I use "Y10").

Both turn the rust (ferrous oxide) into a clear, water-soluble chemical (ferrous oxalate or ferrous phosphate respectively) that vanishes quickly, and can be rinsed clean.

Hi Colin, dont forget gloves if you have any small cuts on your hands..... smarts like bu%4#ry

Ive had success with sealing the rail bases as well with silicon but you have to get rid of all the red stuff.

Thanks for the replies oxalic acid it is then, and gloves. I don't intend taking the rails off this time but will make a note to take them off and a good polish in the future. The worst of the rust is coming from the rails fitted by cheetah, I was careful to give the ones we made and fitted a good polish and fitted them with sikaflex.

Thanks again

Make sure that all of the acid is very well washed off

If not the residue itself starts to stain.

This also happens if the mix is to strong, for that reason I now use the pre mixed gel types [big Job or Y10]

Nice job on Big Wednesday Jamie. biggrin.gif
