lofty Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 According to my tide tidal planner it wasn't such a big tide yesterday but when I drove down to Sandbanks the harbour looked nearly empty? Is this because of the cold weather conditions and the prevailing wind? Lofty Quote
Rob Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 You've got you dates wrong - you are a week ahead of yourself! yesterday was the 4th - big tide next Sat on 11th. Quote
lofty Posted February 5, 2012 Author Report Posted February 5, 2012 (edited) That's what I mean. The tide was way out. Nearly to the channel. And on Sandbanks beach you could walk around the ends of the groins . ? Yesterday Edited February 5, 2012 by lofty Quote
alun j. Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 Air pressure has been HIGH. This pushes down on the water and lowers the sea level. ........ about 1 metre for every 100 millibars of pressure. Recently pressure has been 1030 - 1040 .... so that equals about 30 cms [about a foot] lower than when we have typical mild weather , with pressure around 1000 mbars. Quote
Martin.C Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 I got caught out yesterday with this tide as my tide book predicted low water at around 2pm and 1.1m I came in at mudeford at 4 to find only 1.3 feet of water and dragged my prop for about 20 yards and in Christchurch harbour the same. So thanks alan for the explanation I will keep an eye on air pressures next time. Quote
great white Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 Air pressure seem to affect the tide hights as does the direction of the wind. The level appears low in your picture but out fishing yesterday the run of the tide was very steady, we were not in deep water [just over 20mtrs] and only used 8 ounces of lead all day. Charlie Quote
Barney Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 (edited) As Rob said there is big tides next week easy tide predict Thurs Fri Sat will only have 0.3 at Christchurch entrance. Worth having a look at the bar and what the channel looks like if you use Christchurch. I sat on Mudeford key at 1515 yesterday and it looked prity shallow to me, but it did not stop an orkney 21 coming in. i thought very brave, he probably had lots of local knowledge as he came in from a totally different route than i would use. Martin.C Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 Last Sunday morning we watched a pot boat go out from mudeford followed by the RNLI to catch the route just to see them both run aground Quote
