i am under the impression that skate are protected, please tell me if i am wrong.

I've been unable to find anything that suggests they are protected.

Seee the attached link to a comprehensive government document about research into making certain areas arouind Scotland a marine protected area for the species. If you flog your way through the document it indicates 18 tonnes of the species was landed 2008-11.
