Newboy Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 The fish man will probably come up either this week or next week. Does anyone wants any cuttle and how many? I'll bring them down on the Weymouth trip week Sunday. Price not sure until he gets here, but the cuttle will cost you what he charge me. I will bag it and blast freeze it in my chiller for you. Post here please. Quote
boybilly Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 Yes please newboy, I will have some. What quantities are they in and are they fresh or frozen? BB Quote
blueboatdriver Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 I hope you don't have to pay too much; I think there'll be tons in the bay any time now. I've seen a few of the fishermen taking their traps out this week. Quote
Newboy Posted April 6, 2005 Author Report Posted April 6, 2005 They come fresh (and stewing in their own juice-just like in Blackadder.... ) and I just pick out how many I want. You can put down the size you prefered, samll or large, but I can't guarantee that if too many people want a certain size I will have to share it out to make it fair. I will then get them bagged individually so you can take only one out at a time if you so want. Quote
Newboy Posted April 6, 2005 Author Report Posted April 6, 2005 To be honest, if anyone can get them straight off the quay, it would be cheaper. The fish bloke gets all his fish from Brixham down at Devon and truck it back to Hants to sell to the catering trade. Quote
JIMBOB Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 Yes please ,count me in for as many as you can spare!!!! About a dozen or so If you can get them Thanks James Quote
Sam Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 which species of fish like cuttle fish or is it good for most fish? sam Quote
Newboy Posted April 6, 2005 Author Report Posted April 6, 2005 Cuttle will catch you most fish, rays, bass, bream, cod, pollocks, conger,..... anything that will take a squid will definitely take cuttle. The advantage of cuttle has over squid is that they are tough and will be able to resist crab attack longer. Quote
Swainiac Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 Superb Bream bait Sam, far more hardy than the mortal squid! A few thin strips last forever, still take your squid, cereal and cat food mix for ground bait! Rich Quote
Newboy Posted April 13, 2005 Author Report Posted April 13, 2005 I've got the cuttles, they are huge about 3lb each. So I've only got 20 in total. They are 80p a lb. Quote
Newboy Posted April 13, 2005 Author Report Posted April 13, 2005 Just been talking to the fishman, apparently when the cuttles are in close, there will be no fish, they scare away some and eat the rest that didn't escaped, plaice, bream the lot. Is this true? Quote
Coddy Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 I've got the cuttles, they are huge about 3lb each. So I've only got 20 in total. They are 80p a lb. Kam Will you bring them down to Weymouth if it is still on? Coddy Quote

great white Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 Kam Cuttles certainly do eat their share. We have had problems when using live mackeral for offshore bass on the drift. Had several baits killed and trashed by cuttles Charlie Quote
Paul J Posted April 14, 2005 Report Posted April 14, 2005 you often see cuttle bones floating on the surface when the bream are in,perhaps the cuttles mate and die then the bream feed on them? Quote
Seamouse Posted April 15, 2005 Report Posted April 15, 2005 you often see cuttle bones floating on the surface when the bream are in,perhaps the cuttles mate and die then the bream feed on them? I think the hounds do the same. While a hardback usually picks out the bigger hounds, some days they only seem to want squid. Tipping off a hardback with a strip of squid is a reasonable trick, plus it gives Mr Crab something to do while he's waiting. Their determination to keep eating even with a 3/0 through their nethers is well impressive. Steve Quote
