Bob F
I notice with the DSC VHF radios you can input Group MMSI numbers, as well as Individual MMSI numbers. Does that mean we could get a Group MMSI number for PBSBAC? This would be great for a number of uses: 1 - When you go out to sea you can poll the PBSBAC Group MMSI to see who is out there. All PBSBAC boats with DSC would then automatically reply. This is better than calling by voice and only getting one or two replies. 2 - Any communications that we'd like to keep to the club boats can be transmitted without others hearing. 3 - You can share your position with other PBSBAC boats...a good safety feature. etc, etc. BF
Newboy
Found this on the net and it explains MMSI quite well. MMSI
duncan
Nice link Kam Bob - we don't need a group number you just need to code all PBSBAC boats MMSI numbers to a Group in your set. This gives you 1 in your list 2 doesn't work easily because although you could create a text based message to send to the craft as I undestand it you would be using a standard channel for subsequent 'discussion' IF 1 then the answer to 3 is likely to be the Swash! More practical will be using 1 to call and find out who's out then, depending on responses, you can issue a subsequent position request to someone (as opposed to them explaining where they are in code, by mobile call, or just plain badly!) and then programme the on screen response into your plotter and you get range and bearing "just like that"..... It will make a huge difference, and I suspect we will get pretty proficient in it's use quite quickly given the number of users. All we need now is the weather! Bob F
Ah, so this is where you are posting your replies... My laptop appears to be throwing a wobbly in recent days. I make a post and then can't see the damn thing on the forum, and so post it again. And for some reason my laptop is not picking up new posts in the "view new post" short cut, so I have to search through all the sections manually. Anyway, enough of that... Duncan, Do you have the ICOM 421? I can't see how you apply all the PBSBAC MMSI's to a Group as you suggest. On my 421 when you set up a Group MMSI you have to enter a Group MMSI number, which always starts with a zero. And reading the manual again, it is not clear to me if you can actually send a Poll request or a Position request to a Group. I think all you can do is to send a Group Call. The Group Call then sends a message to all the MMSI numbers in that group which tells them to go to a certain channel. Once you move to the channel, communication is by voice. Am I correct?? Coddy
Hi Bob Reading my Navman manual if you request an LL request it should show the position of your "buddy" if he/she acknowledges the call on your screen. Now if there are a number of boats out and you send a LL request you may get back a number of differant differant locations so it may well be better to use talking to find out what you need. You can set up the set to send an acknowledment automatically to LL calls. A group call, as you say, only seems to set the chatting channel. If it was a comp you have only need to send an Individual message to GW or an other boat to register you are out. Coddy
