Guest Guest_Speciman_Fisherman
Paddled up to Sowley this afternoon launching from Tanners Lane near Lymington. Although this was a fishing trip it was also recce as I am unfamiliar with this area. Went up to the platform out from the wooden posts and anchored there for a good hour or so. The spring tide was ebbing and the current quite strong. Lots of weed made fishing hard and I didn't get any recogniseable bites. Was fishing with sandeel and ragworm. As the tide went out I moved closer inshore to take a look at features there... waded for a bit but then got back onto the kayak after realising I was in classic stingray country and saw a large fish swirl in literally inches of water. Then went back near launch point fished about 1/2 mile out from here fairly close to large yellow buoy and caught a bass at 1lb 3oz ..phew didn't blank:) Left when the sun came down.. next time I will consider a night fishing session here with crabs if going for the smoothhound or rag for the stingray. I probably left when it was the best time to arrive (dusk with incoming tide!).
Swainiac
You should ber able to launch the Kayak at Lepe. You can park the wagon on the shoreline, walk towards the white house right on the waters edge, and head towards the "new" Millenium Beacon there is a concrete slope behind a locked gate on the road corner there, where launching wil be out of the view of the grokkles, who will abound there now. OR, try driving around the corner to Gypsy Lane, drive down there and park, and launch from the beach there. One afloat, get around the point, just outside Beaulieu River, this is Seagull Island, classic Bass fishing, and you will be right on top of them in the shallow water. Stingers have historically been caught here, also, so be aware of the diesel truckers taking your Ragworm baits! A paddle back along the shore, towards where you were moored up, you will pass two bungalows, right on the beach. The square white one....Lordys bungalow, again, classic stinger ground, then farther back towards Sowley Boom, V good stinger ground, with loads of smoothy action also. Baits here have been Rag for Stingers, Hermits, peelers and hardbacks,(just crush em and whip em on!), you will be pestered by small bream on rag, so try catching one, and livebaiting it for stingers also! It has proved a good method before. PM me if you want me to show u round the lanes, Gypsy Lane is V hard to find! Tight lines..........may just bring me a kayak home from Florida! This sounds great fun! Rich
Speciman
Hi Rich Thanks for the advice. I took some pics yesterday & posted a few up at Kayak Fishing - Sowley. I think I beached near the houses you mention as I wanted to stretch the old legs. If the stingray come close inshore here I guess I'll have to go back and fish it on a night high tide? I've heard of Gypsy Lane and am fairly sure I've been down there when driving around aimlessly oneday looking for Park Shore! I'll check my map. It would be great if you brought a kayak back with you - Sit On Top style kayaks are more stable and better suited for fishing than Sit Insides. Needless to say make sure you have the proper safety equipment if you go this route Anglers Afloat - Safety Info The kayak is working out well for me and Zzippy. Had tope up to about 30lb from Wales the other week. Excellent sport from such a small boat. Tywyn Tope Trip We hope to find an inshore Purbeck Tope mark now - I've yet to christen my shark tagging kit
Paul D
I guess it would be impressive catching a stingray in a kayak as I guess they will tow the kayak along ( but I note you fish anchored ). We will be out there on Sunday so a bit of a shame hearing the weed is still bad. ( I guess some close in fishing will be needed ). If you are out on Sunday we will keep an eye out for you. Speciman
Larger fish can tow a kayak with ease if you aren't anchored. If I catch a stingray it won't be coming on board for a picture! However if I'm fishing the shallows and close to the shore I could one bring in there. Good luck for Sunday. I hope to get back there soon but it will be after Mondays tope fishing trip west of Swanage.
