Member Removed Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 At the moment I am using a front wheel drive deisel van (Renault Kangoo) for lanching with. The bottom end of the slipway I use is covered in sand so I have to un-hitch the trailer and roll it down. Retrieval is equally fun, the boat has to be put on the trailer and then the trailer attached to the back of the van with 15m of rope and then dragged up using a skid plate on the front of the trailer untill it is far enough up that I can hitch it up conventionally. The top of the slipway is quite steep so last Saturday I left about 2000 miles worth of rubber on the slipway due to wheel spin. Not the best way of doing things!! I have the chance of an '89 Range Rover for Quote
Newboy Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 The range rover wouldn't have any prblems with the sands, especially the sand should be hard packed. Just use the low ratio on the slippery stuffs if the main 4x4 struggles. Don't forget to add Quote

Newboy Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 Good idea about the front towbar, if anyone here wants to make one, make sure it's off set to the driver side, reason being you don't need the towbar to be at the middle and with it being at the corner you can line it up much easier. I wouldn't recommend using the kangoo on the sand even with the front tow bar. Quote
Swainiac Posted July 28, 2005 Report Posted July 28, 2005 Mikey, common practice in 4x4 circles, the front tow hitch aspect. As far as the Range Rover goes, thirsty, expensive on parts, engine unreliable, gearbox unreliable in older models, British.......but apart from that, I love em!! Unfortunately, the japanese and german 4x4s are far better than our everyday wagons. Try and find an MOT failed Jap 4x4, if it doesnt need to go on the road, no probs. Rich Quote
Newboy Posted July 28, 2005 Report Posted July 28, 2005 How heavy is your rig? You should be able to get away with a small 4x4, like a Sportage or sporttrak. Quote
Member Removed Posted August 1, 2005 Author Report Posted August 1, 2005 Thanks for the info chaps, I don't think I'll be getting the r/rover. I watched one bury itself up to the axles on Suday recovering a jet-ski. Apparently they are prone to diff-lock failure. Quote
