Manic Moore
Come on you electronics wizards, Each time I turn on the GPS I get interference on the VHF, in the way of a signal bar surgesting that I am transmitting. Although the radio seems to work ok, I guess it can't be right. I have tried various changes to no avail. Different arial on VHF, changed the live feed from a different switch bank, used a ferite ring on live feed on both, moved the arial and cable away from the GPS, disconected the GPS arial cable. The only way to stop it is to disconnect the VHF arial. Help please, any ideas
Bob F
Have you tried connecting the GPS power directly to the battery? In other words, don't connect it to a switch panel or bus. In the manuals I have read they often recommend doing this to prevent interference. Make sure the -ve is connected directly to the battery too, just in case you have an earth bus problem. Dont forget a suitable fuse on the +ve line close to the battery when you do this. Just wire it up loosely first to see if it makes any difference. Newboy
How about one of those compresser you get from Halfords? Would it helps or not? Yesterday, the skipper had the criket on and everytime he used the radio, the cricket disappeared, guess it's something along the line? Crickets make thier noise by rubbing their legs together rapidly. But how that would affect a VHF set goodness knows Mad Mike
Bob F
I think you mean a supressor, Kam. Gordon has already tried one of those (the ferrite ring). BF
Manic Moore
Bob, sounds like another couple of areas I can check. It would appear that it is a problem with the GPS as I have connected the radio to a completely seperate battery, 6 feet away from the GPS and disconnected the GPS arial and still has a problem Perhaps I can catch you on Thursday Regards Gordon
Bob F
Yes, lets have a chat on Thurs. BF
Newboy
Yes, a supressor.... Gordon have you try wiring the gps to a seperate power source? If the interferece is still there, then it means the interferece is from the signal and not feedback on the power.
Manic Moore
Bob, It looks like I cocked up the wiring and didn't earth the shield wires Do you think that was the problem?
Paul D
Gordon, If the shield is not earthed ( still puzzling how you managed not to do this ), then this would def. not help and I would bet this is your problem. The shield is there to err umm ... shield the wire from electical interference
Bob F
Absolutely, Gordon!!! That'll be it. Well done matey!!
Manic Moore
It wasn't. I did a couple of tests on Paul J's and there was no interference at all and he had made the same wireing error as me. Lowrance are now replacing the unit anyway as there was no sound from the unit (bleeps when you press the buttons) Excelent service. Putting up with all my calls. The engineer evan spoke to me when he was on holiday.
Bob F
Gordon, When you say "shield wires", specifically which cables are you referring to? BF
