Wedger
Went to see Chris at Greenham & Regis the other day. Very nice chap- good demo. Now my brain's starting to settle down again just thought I'd ask the audience. Modest budget! so I looked at the ICOM 421 VHF/DSC radio. A Standard Horizon CP175C (colour) plotter mit 6" screen and a black box FF550 fishfinder/sounder to plug into the plotter for the display. An outside chance that if the discounts are high enough at 'the show' we might squeak a CP1000C with 10" screen. Observations please................... Wedger
Also, eer....... transducer. Through hull, or not through hull, that is the question?
duncan
ICOM have advised that the 421 will be discounted at the show - what that means of course is anyone's guess but 180 maybe?
Newboy
More than likely your tranducer would have a temperature function, if you use thru hull, the temp thingy won't work. Also, when the time for a new tranducer, you have to fibre glass in another one, while on transome, all you do is run the cable thru and screw it back down using the same fixing holes. Wedger
Oooooops ! Why won't the temperature thingy work? My Wilson Flyer has a Ratheon V 300 + through hull transvestybob and still works great ! Is there something 'unspecial' about the Standard Horizon Kit Answers on a postcard please
Newboy
When you say thru hull, is it glassed in to the hull or you actually fix it thru the hull (never seen that done before)? If it is glassed in, as fibre glass isn't a good heat conductor, the temp gauge won't be accurate, however, can never imagine why would a thomometer with a few degree out matter, unless you are gonna dive in...... Wedger
Through hull, is completely cut through the hull and fixed, rather like a bulkhead or tank connector. Fully exposed to the sea and perhaps more reliably in touch as it is always completely submerged. Just means you have to cut a hole in your bottom ........ .............. plaicemat
As opposed to 'shoot thru hull', which is when it is fixed to the inside of the hull and..........shoots thru it! Then the temp doesn't work.
Wedger
Aaaaaaaaah! chap we're talking cut through, rather than the cheaper, less risky, shoot through

Bob F
Wedger, I really liked the CP175C. Very nearly bought it myself. I found the jopystick much easier to use for navigating around the screen and selecting stuff. Very nice! I found the screen was probably the brightest of all the ones I looked at. And if you are one of those that take their equipment off the boat after each session (dont we all???), then the CP175C has the quickest and easiest disconnect feaure available. Very, very nice. (note that the larger CP1000 does not have this. So why didn't I buy it? 1 - The fishing finder is an add-on unit, and at the time, it had just been released on the market and I was not able to see it demo'd anywhere. 2 - I preferred the detail on the Navionics charts compared to the C-Map charts. 3 - the resolution of the display is not as high and the Lowrance/Eagle. Having said that, I wouldn't let any of these 3 points put you off buying the CP175C. I thought it was a super piece of kit and would recommend it. I'd want to see the FF working, though. The Raymarine E-80 display is in another league. A serious piece of kit. But I suspect that what Pete is offering is just the display(???). You would need to add the GPS unit and FF units, which are not cheap, but are the dogs do-dars. Proably have to add interface cabling, too. If you want the B&O equivalent in TV's then the Raymarine E series is the top of the range for boating. cheers BF
