............ but the fishing , for me, was not up to last week's , or Adam & Gordon's result!

About half an hour behind Adam leaving Mudeford.......and it was still fffffreezing, -2C but 7C in the water........... and 10C + as the sea water surged up the Run..... temp. difference being the cause of the thick mist for a metre above the water.......eerie...... esp. when pushed along by the offshore breeze.

With the sea just into double figures, thought it warm enough for another go after the bass on the Ledge. Dropped anchor close to last week's success spot....... and straight in......... to frisky dogs......5 in 5 mins!!..MOVE..50 m,further onto the rough........ one more dog then nothing apart from a few pout for an hour. 300m move to similar spot........... same result........... what's wrong?? ....... the water looks different........ murkier/ lost its green sheen!

Choice to make....... X-ray? or Needles?

Not confident of whiting at x-ray and expecting wall to wall dogs.........

......Needles...........and the calm sea just makes it in range for my little boat.

Pass a huddle of boats near the end of the ledge........ but its a bit choppy here with wind over tide.....so press on.......... to the boat park about one to one and a half miles south of the white rocks.

Just settle on the anchor....... and up pops Blue Warrior...... with tales of cod and huge eels...... on route for change of mark. Their lack of whiting had me worried;

and so it was.......... lovely sunshine, scenery and fresh air [ now feeling warm].

Action slow......... dogs, pout...... then one massive take and a scrap for ten mins. that was so typically EEL.........why don't I like congers???........it wasn't coming aboard but somewhere in the common 20 - 30 lb. range .

One solitary whiting made it to the fish box.......... and I'm just off to cook it for supper.

Played Mr. Helpful on return ,after 20 min whizz back into colourful sundown; two chaps on first outing on their new Raider 18........ with no waders ; then found Adam's wheel clamp on the slipway, keen to get his cod home ??

Better luck next week ??

Nice report Alun - shame about the fish.

I will piggyback with mine as I can empathise with the title!

Not being quite sure who was actually turning up to fish Sunday, let alone exactly when they planned to turn up, I popped down at 6 to switch the heating on and returned to the van for a leisurely cuppa and brekkie.

Back down at 730 to get things ready the ice was beginning to melt on the screen and the cabin was warm as toast - a condition we kept it in all day long!

Eventually slipped the mooring at 0815 with 5 on board and had a leisurely run out in beautiful conditions to the banks SE of the spoils.

Anchor in and fishing by 9 - what a perfect day................

Alas no one had told the fish. Whilst we had a steady supply of dogs, odd pout and a few whiting all at the 2 1/4lb mark, we saw little else. One rod had 'something a bit better' briefly on but we couldn't match the broken lines adn rods elsewhere let alone the landed fish!

Fished on into darkeness but nothing saw this as a switch to action so headed in as the breeze got up a little at around 1730 - Great White and Shelia Marie having also upped sticks from the same location.

All in all a great day out with good company - none of which I would trade for more fish anyway blink.gif

Well ,for once Andy and I were not the odd ones out,we left P.H about 09.45 out toward needles. tagged on to a group of fellow "danglers" about 6ml from needles[is this area still the outer poole patch,or called something else.? ] stayed 2 hrs. blank..tried again 2ml closer and to the east of needles.kept losing baits without the slightest bite indication, even if lashed on with cotton, moved after lunch to 1ml or so closer to needles.thought the tide had fallen completely away until we realised that a nearby goup of boats had slid away to the north without a sound...realised we were driffting,..pulled up the anchor to fid a loop around the bouy ring with the anchor happily bobbing 50ft beneath it. moved to a point 2ml s.w of needles.had 2 dogs ,once again with no indication of a bite, our reels were just holding on the rachet..do the darn things get the bait in thier mouth and just lie there chomping at it.? in all another uneventful day !. our only excitement was a reply from great white when we called up,on hearing him on the radio.we did'nt say much as they were obviously carrying out thier own advice to say as little as possable on the radio....We thought the conditions were rather lumpy given the forecast...cheers..jack

Lumpy??? Come on Jack you could run Pal o Mine flat out in those conditions on Sunday.

We listened to your report with interest, having had to rely on semaphore from Charlie regarding Gordon & Adam's exploits - and decided we had missed the window for further East.

Re 'robbing bastards' - I trust you had nice short snoods for the slack water? sad.gif It may well have been small bream in which case they will get away everytime - bt they tend to give the rod a rattle when doing it.

Hi Duncan,What I meant by" lumpy",was that my tea kept slopping out of the cup when it was balanced on the gunnel !...Just as a bye the bye,,this was our first trip with the newly scrubbed and anti-fouled bottom..you would not believe the difference even though the old stuff is only a 12 mth build-up. before we did it 2.3 revs [our normal plod ] gave us 15-16 mph [or knots,] can't remember which it shows ,on sun. it popped along at 20+ for the same power, even more noticeable was the fast accelleration.Money and effort well spent, speeding us on toward those fish that are just waiting out there with our names on !! ps. they must be getting pretty peed off by now !!cheers all... dry.gif jack

yep a smooth and clean bum and drive gear make a huge difference on acceleration and cruise (and therefore fuel usage) . weight seems to affect acceleration only in my case. and a really sparkly prop affects top speed only.

re your fish - I had heard that most of the cod being caught were shaking their heads - probably thinking 'you're not Jack then I suppose..........

btw if you can put anything down on the gunnels it must have been like a mirror! I find that anything put down on the gunnels leaves the boat never to return very quickly! We do have the luxuary of multipul beer can holders around the boat that have been know to take mugs in the winter! I am currently working on a little rack to hold them securely upright by the galley when Dave's making the tea.........

btw do you have heating on Pal o Mine?

Yes we have heat,it was too much at times so we turned it off !! eat your hearts out you "trailer sailors". Andy is not happy about our seating, and my own Directors Chair tends to slide about,so he is looking at fitting a rear facing settee,I suppose the upholstry will have to be PVC.a bit cold on the bum in the winter, unless of course we could have heated seats like................no perhaps that would be going too far.!! biggrin.gif jack

One can buy a none slip mat that is used to stop carpets sliding on polished wood. A 12" square undrer yer bum stops all sliding off PVC.

Mad Mike

PS they sell the same stuff for none slip router mats at a highly exhorbitant price.
