Took Gnasher out for the first time since i had the engine done. Launched from Keyhaven, a beautiful little harbour, very shallow though. Had to jump out once as we grounded out in the 'boat channel'.

Out through Hurst, expecting a small chop, flat calm as the light northerly flatterened the sea.

Out towards the needles, over took a couple of the charter boats on the way and headed out to the cod grounds south of the rocks. Dropped down, and landed on the kennel again!!!

Fed them non stop, then a change of plan to see if there were any whiting around. Baited feathers with maccy strips. Nothing by fishing them static, so jigged them off the bottom, tap tap, expecting a whiting i was suprised to find another LSD that had taken the top feather well off the bottom. 3 dogs later and my 1st whiting of the year came along.

This continued as i was catching big whiting and pout every drop, just by jigging the feathers.

Put lots back but kept a few whiting in the 2 to 3lb bracket.

Started thinking of Toms comments about using the VHF correctly and not as a chat channel so i spent 10 mins listening to the charter skippers talking about what he got up to last night, then another 10mins talking about his Jam sandwiched that his missus had made him for Lunch!!!! Exciting lives these chaps have......

Decided to try a big bait, hopefully to out dog the dogs, 12 squid threaded on, expecting nothing, i turned to see the rod bent double in the rest as an angry fish was making off with the bait. Gutted soon after as it dropped the hook, could this of been my 1st cod? A conger was my bet though as the boat next to us had 7 by lunch.

I also listened to reports of a few cod laned on the ledge, with a couple of double figure pollock, maybe i should of gone there instead, but thats for another day.

At least the Whiting have arrived, and in big numbers..
