charlieannear
So far all of the insurers that I have got quotes from have said insurance acceptance is subject to a survey less than 3 years old... which I don't have. One called it a Boat Yard report, which I don't have either. D'oh! This is probably because Star Turn is quite old (1980). Can anyone reccomend a surveyor? And how much is this likely to cost? Is a Boat Yard Report something different? C. (Yes, I know I should have checked this out... )
plaicemat
What sort of boat is Star Turn?

Afishionado
IMO you are asking the wrong insurance companies. This survey nonsence is just that. They are acting like you have a large yacht or cruiser expecting a survey. Not only that a marine survey for insurance purposes could cost over
charlieannear
I've tried Boatinsure, Craftinsure and Porthcawl and all have said they require a survey. I have done these all as online quotes though, so perhaps I have told them the wrong thing. Will have to try the old fashioned telephonical method... Personaly I would pursue exacly what 'they' mean by a yard report or survey and to what purpose do they need it or want it to say. It may be that say Charlie in his capacity as Dock Master at PYC could give them something that reads what they want. Or even some other member with a Yachmaster certificate could do the do. Or what about an RLNI safety report? You could get one of them free? Mad Mike
charlieannear
Yep, have asked Porthcawl to confirm that it is really required, rather than something automatic that got added to the quote because I said something daft on the online form. If they do insist I'll ask exactly what they require. They were the ones that asked for a "Boat Yard report", so if they do insist, then hopefully it is something less 'official' than a full marine survey. If that is the case then I'm sure that something could be arranged as you suggest. Have got the RNLI sea check on my to-do list, but really I want to get several things done to Star Turn before any sort of official inspection! TomBettle
Charlie On Quest 1 I was asked for the same and they simply one someone in the industry to provide a valuation of the vessel on headed paper. If you would like I can provide one based on a "Proposed Part Exchange" Valuation. I would need to know all the details though so I can do it properly! Give me a call and I will write one for you. 07780687795 or 01202 706943 (office). Details I need: Make, Model & Hull Number if you can get it (usually etched in the hull on or around the starboard quarter), year of boat, any extras fitted to the boat, overall condition of the boat and what value enhancing features you plan to put on. Engine, make, model and year. Price you paid, price for insurance puropses etc. It would help if I can take a gander at the boat, but this may not be practical so I would appreciate photo's if you have any. From the above information I can do a bit of ringing and searching, get a true valuation and place it on letter head. You should find that will suffice. Alternatively, if all that sounds a load of hassel I can get one of my insurance "mates" to give you a tinkle and he may be able to run it through without that info. He is from Denovo Marine Underwriting at http://www.insure-my-boat.com All the best Tom
TomBettle
Charlie Just chatted to my man at Denovo and he was quite honest and said: 1) He recommends Craftinsure for older cheaper boats (Denovo don't get involved for sub
charlieannear
Thanks Tom Porthcawl gave me a good quote, it's just this Boat Yard report that is stopping me paying up straight away. The others have asked for a Survey, which sounds more finickity (technical insurance term ) Porthcawl have come back and said a Boat Yard Report of Seaworthiness is required as the boat is over 25 years old (according to hull number and Shetland's website) so I have asked them to confirm exactly what they require. I have all the information that you specify, so hopefully I'll be able to give you a call when they let me know! C.
spNOam
The site is currently under construction but this outfit is probably worth a ring if it's just third party liability insurance you are after, I have been using them for a number of years. http://www.basic-boat.com/
Newboy
When I had my sheltie, most insurance companies required a survet done on the boat. In the end I opted for one that didn't need a survey, it was a little more in premium but a lot less than the cost of a survey. Unfortunately I had a clear out before X'mas and all the old insurance certs went into the recycle bin. I do remember it was either linked from boat and outboard or boatsforsale.com
