Paul D
I spliced my three strand nylon rope onto the anchor chain ( around the shackle ). I was well chuffed as it was my first attempt at splicing and even Helen sounded surprised when she said it looked good ! However, how much will the loop through the shackle wear I wonder ( I notice that many use a metal thimble to avoid wear ) ?? Would it be better to splice partly down the chain instead ? I guess it is better than when I had it tied in a knot to the shackle ( this kept catching on the alderney ring )
lady jane
IF YOU BUY A CHAIN AND ROPE MADE UP THEY NORMALLY SPLICE IT USING WHAT I THINK THEY CALL A MONKEYS FIST RATHER THAN A LOOP SPLICE. BUT NOTE SURE OF REASON. CHEERS ANDY
alankirby
I splice my rope into the chain, it makes for smooth running through the alderney ring. 3 strand into chain splice It`s quite simple to do when you follow the pictures and instructions. If you Google for "3 strand into chain splice" you should find some more sites. Alan
TomBettle
Nice demo site Alan. Have to say I have never spliced to the chain, but have always used a "Dogs Dick" or Back Splice which works perfectly with minimal wear. It runs freely thorugh my windlass so I guess will be fine with Alderney ring too. Take two of the thee strands through the end link of chain and work backwards with all three as normal. Works well, wears well, is neat and tidy.
Newboy
I have both on my boat . The main wrap comes with a ring spliced in so I kept that, don't have any problems running that thru the alderney ring. The only problem I ever encountered was that I lost my first anchor and chain when the rocking motions of the boat 'unscrewed' the pin. Now I tied the pin down with a small bit of wire thru the hole on the pin. My spare wrap, which is octaplait and thinner, I splied that into the chain simply because I was afraied of losing another set. Plus I felt like doing it at the time. Mike Fox
If you decide to keep rope and chain separate for any reason, you can splice a stainless (or plastic) eye into the rope, then shackle the eye to the chain. You can get non-rusting monel wire from chandlers to "mouse" an anchor shackle securely. Have used it for years, and never had one come undone, even when the anchor has been dragged and buried. Mike That's exactly what I do Mike. It has never jambed in the Alderney hoop and I think that there is much less chance of wear through abraision using this method. More to the point on splicing in general. It is a very good skill to master. One can join one rope end to another to lengthen any warp, one can step up/down in diameter by splicing say 10mm to 14mm. I am by no means a master splicer and I think it could make a very good tutorial for one of the club meetings. (bring your own fid !) great white
Paul It would be better as others have said to fit a hard eye into the splice. but providing you keep an eye on the one you have done you should be fine. Mike are you volunteering to do the tutorial ??? Charlie
Afishionado
Quote.....Mike are you volunteering to do the tutorial ??? No way Charlie, as I said I am by no means a master splicer, mine work OK but at odd times through the splice I loose my way and the finished artical looks a bit uneven. What I would like to learn is how to make really neat seaman like ones. I used to be able to do it 50 years ago as a kid in Cornwall but I have lost the knack over the years through lack of practice Same with knots too, I used to do all the fancy ones, Monkey Fists, Clover Leaves and all that but I can't remember all of it these days. TomBettle
Mike I would be up for a bit of splicing tuition. 15 uears ago I could do a beautiful job on them all as I had to learn as part of my "seamanship" training for the merchant navy, but like you, lack of practise means I can still splice, but I get a bit lost and although they are solid they aren't very neat. Any expert splicers wanting to do a demo at a club meeting? Tom

Sinbad
I'm not volunteering for the demo but ....Count me in..... for the Shoddy Splicers Splinter Sessions , as my anchor warp is a load of 'long spliced' sections - looks as 'rough as guts' but does the job. toerag
The secret to neat splices is to colourcode each strand with different coloured tape, and to use each one in turn in exactly the same order each time, neatening up the splice after each set of tucks. If you do more tucks with one particular colour then it all goes wrong. Having taught about 60 scouts to do eye, back and joining splices I'm pretty qualified! Oh and it also helps to not let the strands get untwisted, 'cos that's messy too.

Please don't attempt any answer that pleads that you are all tied up with a knotty problem, or that you have lost the thread of what you are doing, let alone saying that you are in a-ccord with the idea. Mind you there'll be some here who wont resist roping in others with bad rope puns. Mad Mike

Swainiac
Mikey, would it help if I were to do some step by steps with piccies of specific splices for you, that way, we can bung them on here and they are there for all to see, also if I cock it up, thats something else that u can rib me for!!!! I'm more than happy to do stuff fromBack splicing Eye splicingshort splicing to basic seizings, braiding, chain sennets for example, different bindings like lashing or transom knots etc, I can cover carrying stowage and storing, loops hitches and bends. Seeing how popular Bobs annimated fishermans knots were, I'm more than happy to crack off some step by step pics of different boaty stuff, after all a picture speaks a thousand words, as opposed to Rich or Tom gabbling on in a million!!!!!
