Kite Fishing

Anyone in a fit of madness thought of Kite Fishing for Bass ??

The kite sends out your live bait and it sits splashing about on the surface of the sea and then a great big Sailfish, Oopps !!!, i mean Bass, comes crashing to the surface and takes the bait. The line from your rod releases from the clip on the kite string and your left palying the fish like normal.

All sound good fun and should get some funny looks from other boat anglers.

No more so than when your kite gets tangled with there tackle and hoist it all skyward and it all comes crashing down on top of another boat 200 yards away laugh.gif

Have a read here if your not sure

I sat behind some guys on Sanibel Island once that were flying mullet livebaits out to pods of Tarpon off the beach. Seemed to work really well and they managed to get the mullet at least 200 yards off the beach. They use mullet in the same size range as we use mackerel.

I bought one last year while in the States but still haven't got round to trying it in a real fishing situation. Very easy to fly in slight breeze

I have no doubt it will work in the right place at the right time.

There is a tail that the lighthouse keepers, somewhere in the Scilly Islands I think, where the lighthouse was surrounded a rocky shore used to use a large box kite to take out a length of line with a baited hook. When it was over open water the kite would be allowed to lower trailing the bait into the water. When a fish took the bait they manouvered the kite higher and retrieved it together with the fish.

I don't know if the story is true, but wouldn't it be great if it was biggrin.gif

we saw this when we fished on a beach in new zealand he just used his kite to get the bait as far out as possible and then he just sat down with a beer.

about half an hour later he set off his electric winch and it brought back in a huge snapper about 15lbs and he did this for the rest of the day that seems like my kind of fishing

The american and NZ/Aut have different type of kite fishing. The american (mainly boatfishing) use the kite to 'fly' the livebait on the surface imitating baitfish jumping thru water whereas the Aussie/Kiwi (shore fishing) use the kite to get the bait (real bait, prawn, pilchard chunks,...) 1000+ (yes 1000) metres from the shore with either longline or ledging. It's not uncommon to get several fish in one go. I've got the link somewhere at the shop computer, I'll try to dig it out later.

Ive used a kite to train a Falcon to ring up higher and higher to get to the optimum hunting height, then release a lure from the kite for the Falcon to stoop on. Great fun, but as far as getting a live bait to skip on the surface, I'd rather go for a wedger speacial of magnet and watch the action close in!!!
