The previous owner of my boat stuck a piece of wood (18" x 6") to the inside of the inner transom to mount a homemade rod holder. I have since removed the piece of wood to be left with an unsightly area of rock hard glue which will not peel off. It looks like it could be 'no more nails'. Any suggestions on how to remove it short of chiselling and sand paper?

If it is on good gel coat then some very VERY fine sand paper and plenty of elbow grease will do the job. Once done, I rub of some cutting compound (even Cif will work) followed by a good polish will bring it back like new.

Don't go further than you have to with the sanding and try and work an even area, but it will bring it up a treat.

Gripfill/No more nails etc used to be solvent based, therefore petrol should (eventualy) disolve them and petrol will do no harm to the GRP. Personaly I think you are on a hiding to nothing with trying disolve it or rub it down by hand. I would go the solidified residue with a disk sander or grinding wheel. One can be supprisingly delicate using a light touch with an angle grinder. After getting the gunk off I would reface by smoothing a layer of Isopon P38 over the abraided area and when this has set and been hand sandes I would recolour with ordinary paint.
