alun j.
What a super day to be out....... Not too sure bream was the best target today [ and other reports cite some good fish ] , but Paul and I stuck to plan with the comp. Left early enough to miss the low water on the Bar and met Gordon coming out on Fugazi; we were drifting about in the shoals of mullet, looking for a bass with spinners .......... but no action. So off over the Ledge to stock up on Mackeral for bait before our time slot started, but there were few there on the ebb. Part ! of plan was to fish the Rough on the last of the ebb........... and we were in to fish from the off. I think the berley helped and we kept fish coming continuously , albeit with lots of little ones [ but a good sign for the future ??]. Mixed in were a few bigger fish....... and Paul crowned the day with a PB for him at 3 lbs. 10 oz. Could this be in contention for the Bream Cup ??? Mike [ Frisky ] Fox joined in nearby...... as did a few charters; but we didn't see them pull up many bream. It does seem odd watching fishing off the back off a yacht !!.........Did you have anchoring problems Mike ? Part 11 of plan was a complete disappointment; flood tide on the edge of the Ledge produced very little......... a complete contrast to our morning. Hope ours had a good day and got a few bream ......... but not as big as Paul's ! Well done Paul ......... cracking fish .......... you did much better than I could today. Alun. Sinbad
Alun I'd echo all that you said. A fantastic day out on the water under the guidance of the 'grand master harvester'... and thanks for putting us so expertly on the bank and making the right choice between the two potential marks we could have gone for. I also have to thank you for doing the 'burley bomb', as this kept me fishing and you on cooking squad This one is special to me because I didnt actually have a PB before - and it has been a while since I boated a decent anything!! A great way to end the eveningas well, with the barbeque and good company. Roll on next or any weekend. Mike Fox
What a superb bream Paul! When I saw the net come out I suspected it was something special. It was a flat calm day on the Rough when we arrived. We only had a few squid and manky worms (following a frustrating day off Swanage yesterday with wrasse to 4lb) so we trolled for mackerel on the way over. Not many about this year, but we managed 3 for bait. We anchored on my numbers, fairly close to Alun and Paul, using our new "lunch pick" for the first time on the first of the flood with no problems. We were quite optimistic, until the pout started, then kept coming ! The only bream were small, the wrasse avoided us (for a change) and we eventually convinced ourselves the bigger bream were slightly further out. We moved again, into slightly deeper water, but the anchor wasn't quite man enough. A 5 kg Bruce is easy enough to man-handle, but proved to lack the surface area to bite, even on a neaps flood with a seabreeze, and it dragged a couple of times. Eventually it bit, but 6 tons of boat tripped the double cable ties, and we then drifted for pollack (how come we never seem to get them over 2lb ???). A great day out, even though we weren't fishing the comp. Mike Edited June 19, 2006 by Mike Fox
Paul D
Nice Bream Paul, looking a bit choppy out there as well Surely that will be in contention for the comp ???
alun j.
With the lack of bream reports I'm going to have to log up my 2 lb.er as there's a 'Runner-up' trophy.... I hadn't been aware of. I didn't think one of this size would be in the reckoning..... esp. as we had quite a lot of bream on our 'Patch'. Alun.
Fugazi
Well done Paul it's great to know there are still some Bream about, we only managed one monster circa 6 oz, but the mark turned out to be good for mackerel. So we filled the live bait tank up and headed for the Bass marks. Unfortunately things didn
alun j.
Hi Gordon, I think that the Berley helped......... it kept the fish there feeding all through the slack. Yes, there were a lot of small ones and pout [ keeping the seagulls happy ] there but we did pick up the occasional better....... and one very good one. Downside......... very busy and takes time chopping and mixing . What a smashing day to be out.......... must try that live- baiting method soon but will need to get out with someone with a tank.
