Any recomendations for a good 12lb class rod to, as stock at local tackle dealer very limited. Thanks all I have a 12/20 lb Fladen Maxximus solid carbon which is fabulous, It is coupled to an left handed Abu 6500 level wind. I prefer L/H wind as my right hand/arm is naturaly the stronger and more able to hold rod and reel. The outfit was bought via Ebay as a set for
plaicemat
I also use Fladen solid 'c' 12-20 rods paired with either Abu 6000 or 6500LD, which are a delight. I personally think the Abu 7000 would be a slight overkill for use with a 12lb outfit. I have 3 Abu 6000, none of which did I pay more than
Newboy
Make sure it's a swedish made one and not one of the new Taiwan one. Abu was taken over and those made in the far east use plastic components apparently.

I can not imagine any business being so foolhardy as to buy a company with a reputation like Abu and then churning out second rate reels with plastic gearing. Mind you Vauhall (GM) bought Saab and now the Saab is a sexed up Vectra. Mad Mike
Newboy
Read it on another forum Abu was losing money and had tosellto a Taiwanese company who in turn, trying to make it more viable, transfer some of the production over there and uses alternative parts in cost cutting. It's not hard to understand tho. Abu is traditionally very dependable brand but they sell at Okuma prices. As mentioned above

Swainiac
I must admit, I have had a few ABUS over the years, indeed I used my Ambassedeur 5000, the first multiplier I ever bought, way back when men were men and women were glad of it, today in the species hunt, and it feels so different to the 7000 LD I also used today, they even sound so different, I have had problems with the 6500LD series, sent it back for problems with the engaging mechanism, then flogged it when it came back refurbished, as I felt it just didnt have the guts for the style of fishing I was using it for. To be honest, Islander, sorry dont know your first name, for an inshore reel, mid to shallow water, using sub 12oz leads to hold bottom, my choice would be my TLD 5, or maybe one of the smaller Diawa reels, unless you are able to get a decent ABU 5000 series, or older 6000. TomBettle
Forget the new Abu's from the far east. Go for the decent penn's or shimano's over and over again.
Newboy
As Tom said, go for Shimano for smooth drag in the mid range, Penn for the biggies, not as smooth as the Shimano, but plenty of gut and can take lots of abuse you throw at it. Also have a look at the Daiwa, my friend got a Saltiga, so smooth and light, but not cheap at over $300, I've ordered it's little brother the saltist, obviously not the Saltiga but at $130, I can't really expect too much, or can I? Swainiac
Blimey Guv'nor, strike a light................just had a flash back, Islander!!! Get on to Crazy Fred off this forum, he is flogging a couple of Penn 975's, not a lever drag, but still a cracking little multiplier. I borrowed one off BB the other week, and it worked a treat for me in the Race, very nice reels, although crazy's isnt a lever drag, but at the price he is floggin' em for, it matters not. (Ten pound discount off me reel Fred?????? ) Rich

islander99
Hi everyone, thanks for all your advice guys, I hear what you are saying about the fladden 12/20 but I am having trouble finding one on the net. what I have seen in my local tackle dealers is a leeda pirahna 12/20 carbon for 50 quid which seems a very nice rod . anyone got one and is it as good as I think it may be. As for the reel what I definately want is a lever drag. Tld 5 could be good but are they still made. It seems that there is not to much choice in the sort of size that I need. Finaly are you saying that all Abu's are made in far east or just some. Islander
alun j.
Hi Islander, The rods we've been talking about are the Solid Carbon rods that are soooooooo thin and light...... bendy but with masses of power as they curve; quite different from carbon / graphite rods which are hollow and made from blanks with varying amounts of carbon fibre in the mix. Try on eBay via 'Fatboybeerman', aka Lee..... he's helpful and can probably find you one at a good price [ esp. if you mention the club ]. Abu now seems a multinational production outfit , sourcing and assembling in different countries.........but all to Abu's high standards I've got reels that say made in Sweden, some say assembled in Sweden, some with Swedish made gears and others made in the Far East. They all seem as good to me.......... if matched to their appropriate tackle eg. the smaller ones ,up to 6000 size were designed for spinning, with weights up to a couple of ozs. Try casting a Toby with a TLD 5 and you'll soon have a lovely birds nest. My solution.......... I've got loads of reels to choose from.........but never use half of them !! Alun. Newboy
I think they stopped making the TLD 5 long ago.
