Went wrecking on Valkyrie yesterday. ( Superb skipper Glen Cairnes is and steamed out to just off 10 miles from the french coast )

Fished a wreck off the French coast and have go the hang of fishing the stormies for pollock now. Superb fishing in around 150 metres of water.

Topped the day off with a 10-11lb cod as well.

More detail of the trip when I get a chance to use my PC at home but aching now.....

Set off at 7 AM from Hayling Island to meet up with Valkyrie ( skippered by Glen Caines ) and a 2 1/2 hr steam saw us reaching a wreck the other side of the channel.

I was fishing with two other friends and there was a couple of other hroups of anglers who nabbed the spots at the back of the boat, so we opted to fish from the side of the boat.

Last time I went wrecking I found it really daunting what with the long drop down, the reel up to avoid the wreck and the the drop back down. This time, I have it nailed.

Armed with orangy stormie on around 10 ft trace and 8 oz lead ( thanks to Paul J ) and first drift I lower the tackle all the way to the bottom ( seems like an age ). Skipper then sound the horn once to signal that the wreck is coming up, so wound up 10-15 turns and the skipper sound horn to signal that the back of the wreck has been reached, so lower the tackle to the bottom and wind up 10 turns, down 10 then BANG - straight into a pollock.

Next drift the fish are getting bigger and both myself and my friend Steve lose our stormies. Glen tells us heavier leader needed - so upped mine to 30lb.

A few pollock later and as the tide was slackening, we anchored on another wreck. Fished this initially with a stormie and more pollock. Fed up with pollock, so switch to mackeral on a smaller hook and stright into the bream. Had a fish of around 3 to 4 lb which was nothing special as the guy at the back of the boat hauled up one which weighed in at 6lb straight - awesome fish.

As tide picked up, I hooked into a better pollock on the mackeral and my friend Steve caught a nice ling which was landed on the opposite side of the boat to where he was fishing.

As tide was strong, switched back to drifting the wreck and I asked Glen if there were any cod on the wrecks. "It's getting towards the end of the season". Well, blow me down, next drift, I hook into a fish which fights all the way to the top - this is no pollock and a 11 lbish cod arives after a decent scrap.

Last but one drift someone kindly took half my braid around their line, so I had to retackle for the last drift. Hurridly set up a flying collar rig and get down to the bottom. Glen signals the wreck has arrived - I wind up and wait. - To hell with it I thought, its the last drift, so might as well go for it, so lower toward the wreck.

Straight into a pollock again.

Superb days fishing on the hottest day of the year. Top notch skipper on a great boat and certainly put us on the fish. Definitely going back to try again.

PS: Picture is on my friends mobile - awaiting transfer.

You'll have to get out with us on Quest II.

Doesn't cost anything like as much as a charter, you'll catch as many fish and you don't have to travel as far.... although we normally do! unsure.gif

Seriously though, well done on sussing it out, great fun on light gear and you would be welcome out for the day wheneve we have space.

Tom
