Trigger Happy....

Glad I made that early start....... motoring down the Run before six am.... and plenty of water rushing out.

Mackeral aplenty near Hengistbury.........but no little ones [ seems to be my story this year!]. Drifted the Ledge over the last of the ebb and the slack; the fresh NW wind pushed the boat along the top.........but no action, save meeting up with Paul J and Kam on Marineboy. We decided to try and emulate Adam and Tom's success ........but it was slow....... I picked up two similar - sized bass, the better one went 4lb. 4 oz.; Paul got one a bit bigger , I think.

Things got weedy and the wind shifted more N., so I thought of a change of sceen and try for a trigger on a spot I got several a few years ago. Bream were quickly around, with a few table sized fish amongst them.........then a stonking bite [ bass like but soon realised this was something else] .........a line taking fight and many short runs but staying deep, could it be a big ray ?? No , I've given the game away, it was a trigger..........3 lb 3 oz ......which I just noticed is better than James' record !! Paul took a few photos, when I pulled alongside; so if he posts them , you can see what weirdly tropical shapes these are, that big scything tail gives a real dash to their swimming!

End of part one.......... off for a sole session tonight......another record up for grabs ??

Nice day out today, weather and sea state much nicer than expected but the tide not as big.

Kam was excellent company and the perfect crew man even though he outfished me. dry.gif

The day was slow with only the one bass to Kam which went between 4-5lbs,

It was a great sight to see Kam doing his Rex Hunt impression: a little short rod held completeley down in the water as the bass took him under the boat and round the bow a couple of times- the Joys of an open boat!, Nicely done Kam! biggrin.gif

We joined AJ at anchor and scratched out as few bream- loads of Joeys to worm baits blink.gif and a Gunnard.

A brilliant day out on Marine boy with Paul, even tho I only slept for 3 hours last night dry.gif .

First time out thru the run and it was daunting to say the least, the last time I saw the seabed that close I was walking on it!!! wink.gif

MarineBoy is a brilliant boat, if I get back to owning a boat a dory would definitely be my choice. Love the open boat concept where I can walk round unhindered (proved useful later).

The fishing was a little slow, struggled to catch mackeral for love or money, although Paul had little trouble, however, we did eventually found the perfect mackeral catching way. Anchoring a bream mark and send down stripes of mackeral on a 2 hooks paternoster, caught nothing but mackeral for the first 10 minutes mad.gif .

Only caught a single bass on float which took me on a dancing trail for a little while round the boat. Starting from the port aft and ended all the way round by the s/b mid, dipping the rod in water a couple of times. The fish weighs 5 1/2 lb on the kitchen scale well chaff. Also caught about 10 breams, a couple of keepers all the rest smaller females.

The biggest gain for me today is crewing for Paul and saw Alun landing the trgger fish, first time I have ever seen a trigger up close, weird looking thing biggrin.gif .

Thank you Paul for a great day and hope to crew for you again in the future.

Nice fish both Kam and Alun and not the slightest bit envious that I had to go and work - honest !

Good to see the triggers around though. I recall catching one last year and they fight so well. Could be useful for Sunday's species comp me thinks smile.gif

PS: Alun - "change of sceen" ?? - standard of teaching nowdays not what it used to be smile.giftongue.gif

I'll take the liberty of answering for Alun on this - he kindly took me along on the sole fishing expedition to help show me the ropes (I'm new to fishing from a boat - and not greatly experienced at fishing from the shore either!). We went out through the run and across to Barton and anchored. The forecast (I thought) was winds from the N(ish) dying away. Instead it swung round more to the West, and increased slightly. So we sat at anchor, rolling slightly, while Alun caught a couple of bream and I practised tying knots on a moving boat for the first time - probably a world record for the longest time to tie a blood knot I should think... About the time Alun gat his second bream I was thinking the action was a bit slow and so decided to "groundbait" the water on my side of the boat with my dinner! Perhaps corned-beef pie and potatoes aren't the best fish attractors, especially "second hand" - I don't know - but I hadn't planned that far ahead when eating my dinner. (Sorry, Alun!) Anyway, havng got rid of that I felt a bit better and managed (after some prompting from Alun) to reel in a small bass which had kindly hooked itself. A little later, after another bream for Alun and one for me (the only fish we kept, because 1. It had swallowed the hook and 2. The sea owed me a dinner) Alun took pity on me (I'd upchucked again a couple of times) and we came back. Thanks to Alun for kindly showing me how it's done (and making it all look easy in the process - although I know it isn't!)

P.S. I WILL be back - hopefully the mal-de-mer will pass with time and experience

P.P.S. I had the bream for dinner this evening - delicious! biggrin.gif

Hi Andy,

Sole fishing was 'pants' !! The wind came up and backed into the west causing a bit of swell [ poor Dave didn't appreciate that after me promising a millpond !!]. I don't think the groundbaiting helped put them off, there were plenty of smallish bream and odd bass before weed and waves drew 'early stumps'

Back to triggers.........

......on returning back yesterday I reweighed the fish to see if it had lost any.... and..... it was more !!........ 3 lb. 6 oz.......... so much for weighing on moving boats ! Paul J. advised re-submission.........so have reposted catch report.

I will be back out there over next few weeks.......I have had bigger ones in previous years [ before joining PBSBAC]. .......if I can be dragged away from the bass.

If you hook into a trigger........be prepared for the most unexpected tussle...... deep and poiwerful.......think of soupped - up bream !!

Dave,

It is any help, I too start feeling sea sick if I try to tie knots on a stationary boat, never mind a moving one ( I find it the quickest way of feeling ill ).

Taking your eyes off the horizon and concentrating on some other task, I start to feel rough in 15-30 secs or so.

Mind you, I found it is not so bad now I have had the boat for 3 years or so.

PS: Just looking at the picture of some guy eating a huge pizza slice whilst typing this laugh.gif
