Paul D
A friend of Helen was holidaying in the area with her boyfriend and I was asked if I could take him for a fishing trip out. Wind was blowing around F4 off shore, so harbour looked a little lumpy. I figured it would be OK out there as it was an offshore wind. The bay looked lovely and calm and a slight chop out towards x-ray. Drifted for mackeral and had them straight from the off. Lovely small joeys. Then headed off to get some shelter from the wind and try some drifts for bass with live joeys. Tides were small, so wasn't expecting much. Second drift and my fishing partner is stright into a bass - only around 16 inches long, so returned. Next drift over the same area yielded nothing. Third drift over a slightly different area and I was into a better stamp of fish. 5lb 8oz bass landed some 5-10 minutes later - the fish fought like a demon in around 15 ft of water. Then as we only had two mackeral left - headed to try on the ledge. This was hopeless as the northerly wind was causing us to drift in a southerly direction perpendicular to the tide. As tide was turning and starting to rough up - called it a day and headed back in.
alun j.
Well done Paul, That's the perfect size bass for the table........ for about 6 people. Was it in good condition ?? I bet they should be getting full of fat by now. Certainly true of the mackeral....... if you cook some up now, they ooze their succulent richness...... much better than the early season fish which cook up much 'drier'. Are you fishing tomorrow ?? Paul D
The bass was in really good condition and is going to be feeding 5 people tomorrow ( Not fishing tomorrow as have family commitments ). The mackeral was far to small to eat though but perfect for catching bass Your trigger mark could be quite productive for bass as well I think ;-)
alun j.
Well maybe............but not for me !! Last two times out there, I put out a free-lined mackeral...... not a touch !! But.......... neither were the triggers !! Hoping to restore my ' touch' tomorrow.......... having been a bit off-form recently !! ............[ too much work !! ]. Alun.
