rich
I have a chance of a temporary pontoon mooring for two to three months throughout the winter in a local marina. At present my Orkney is trailered and has no paint finish other than manufacturers finish. If I leave it in the water for this length of time could it affect the hull in any way, other than a build up of weed? Could it introduce osmosis by leaving it in water without anti-fouling? I can easily pull the boat out to wash of any weed if it looks like building up. I hope to be selling the boat in the near future and don't want to introduce a problem to a sound boat. I look forward to your comments Rich
Newboy
Anti fouling devalues a (trailer) boat, so I wouldn't do it unless it is neccessary. Osmosis will only occure if water gets into the f/glass. So if the gel coat is good then you have no problems. What a lot of people do is keep the boat on mooring and them take it out of water to jet wash the hull every month (less in summer), not just the weeds but also banacle. The guy who serviced my outboard at Extreme Marine has a mooring behind his house, and he put his boat on trailer every month to clean the hull. Afishionado
Kam's advice is spot on. Weed fouling will be low anyway in the winter months. Antifoul has absolutly no waterproofing qualities at all and is no protection against osmosis. Osmosis occurs because of either of two factors ... On a new boat hull that has not had sufficent cureing time before being put in the water, therefore leaving minute pockets of liquid styrene which has a lower density than salt water thus creating the physico/chemical process called osmosis. or A GRP hull left in salt water but having fresh water laying in the bilges for a long length of time. duncan
going to completely agree with Kam ( ) but Weed fouling will be low anyway in the winter months - the water is pretty much at it's hottest at the moment. OK it will cool gradually but he's only in for a bit. It will foul but a quick blow over every 2 weeks should keep it clean
Afishionado
Oh I see.... A blow job every two weeks? That's better than average I'd say Mad Mike
duncan
'bout right for a trailboater I would have thought - few years ago for me and the memories are failing.............

rich
Thanks for the advice. I see anti - foul doesn't apply to some of the reply's though! Rich
