Afishionado
Went out from Cobbs at about 10 and had a nice blat round to Holton Mere where full of expectation we thought we would try for an early flounder. Two hours later expectation had died and the wind had become chill and stronger so we decided to go back down the harbour and try somewhere else. I had been thinking of a couple of markes that I know down near the castle. On the way down there we spotted several fishing boats drifting near the RoRo berths so we thought we couldn't do much worse so we would give it a try. I havent fished in that area for maybe 30 years when it was a good flounder drift in about 15ft. I was astonished to find it now regestered 36ft. So we tried a drift and were into red gurnard, tiny checkers and bigger bass up to about 3lb. Each drift produced a fish or two so it did bring some fun back into what turned out to be a grey misty wind blasted cold day. We saw Gazzer and Kieth in their respective boats out on the same mark, easy to see the club pennant, and I am pleased to say IMO we caught considerably more fish than they did Mad Mike
Paul D
Mike, Glad to see you got out but who cares about the catches - everyone is doing the comp - ( only kidding ). Not the type of day to venture from the harbour I would think. Had a trip out yesterday with Paul J and got one bass and what seemed like a ton of dogfish. Fished Southbourne Rough and the sea was lumping up a bit as well. Coming back in with only interior light + nav lights as my steaming light broke. On arrival at Wick we were met by the police who had been alerted to the prescence of an Orkney coming upstream. Nice to know they are keeping an eye on things. I told them PJ made me take the boat It was tempting to turn around just before the slipway and steam off upstream - "just to see what happens" - but decided that wouldn't be so clever. Anyway - about the most exciting part of the trip out.

Fugazi
Ventured out from Wick today and braved the Easterly wind for 6 hours with a few other die herds. Amazed that after missing a bite on the first drop the scrap of bait left on the hook was taken on the retrieve at the surface by a Mackerel. Encouraged by this Chris set up his Mackerel rig and proceeded to catch a bucket full. The bites continued and we had a constant small Bream action all day except for the 4 table size ones I kept. Mike Fox
Took Frisky for a jaunt, and found conditions unpleasant for drifiting in the Swash, and reckoned it would be worse further out, so had a dangle on half a dozen marks inside Poole Harbour. Scratching around a bit, and over half a dozen marks, we bagged 8 species, which bodes well for the next species comp. Loads of small boats fishing out of the Easterly wind, and saw a couple of club boats too, getting cheery waves from the ones that recognised us! Mike, Carol and George PS Good to hear that pan-sized bream are still around!
alun j.
We were in the Western Solent, where the wind was much more N.E. and whilstling down with little shelter. Much more pleasant at 8, Gordon and I were able to drift the Bridge on the last of the ebb............ fishing Stormies with high hopes. Second drift and Gordon's into a fish, not big, but up comes a wrasse !!, about 3 lb. to a jelly eel. No more action here and no tide. Wind freshening, so didn't fancy our chances out by the charters south of the Needles. The trip back up the Solent was slow and bumpy, with wind[increasing] over tide [increasing] and ,by the time we got to Yarmouth, with no shelter apparent, I was thinking of changing plans. Gordon said to give it a go and put out a bucket drouge; that did the trick and held us in the tide nicely! Within 30 mins, I picked up three bass 3- 4 lb. size whilst Gordon got doggies pretending to be bass and putting up a line-taking thump! Then everything went quiet and we spent a few hours watching the boats[ to make sure they missed us !] Not a very successful day, but three bass in the box in a fresh Easterly is a result ! Alun.
