britboard Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 I used the quay a lot until i discovered christchurch wick, the problem with the quay is that it can be a bit of a walk with your boat to get it floating. Fine if you have got a little boat, also you take you chances when it comes to parking your trailer as it "first come last to leave system" as the trailers get stacked up alongside the slip. i once had to wait for 4 hrs to free my trailer as 2 other people had chained theirs to mine . Christchurch Wick is a better bet, good steep slip, plenty of parking and a freshwater wash for your engine on the way home. Quote
Paul D Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 Simon, Come the winter the quay is not busy at all ( and free to launch ). Parking is cheaper then as well. However, still need to push the trailer out further etc. but you do get a head start as no need to steam through the harbour. I must admit I launch most time from Wick as easier for me to get the boat of the trailer. ( Need to get a trailer with a cradle and launching / retrieval will be so much easier ). Quote
Gnasher Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 I launch from Mudeford everytime, only because its another 20mins each way steaming up the river from Wick to get to mudeford. The slip is shallow and you have to be careful as the water shallows up just past the slip as you aim for the boat channel, then there is the bar which can be shallow and can also have breakers racing accross it. If you keep an eye on the tides its no probs, also keep an eye on the swell through the run as i was bobbing allover the place last time i motored through. Its free all winter, but in the summer, launch just before 9am when its free then you dont have to pay for the retrieve. Lock your trailor up to the railings alongside the slip. Wick is deeper, and you can also flush the engine with fresh water on the way back up the river. I just like to maximise my fishing time and get out from Mudeford. I dont really know how they police it by getting 2 tickets as the trailors in the park can belong to anybody. I have never bought 2 tickets, but I know your ment to. Or, just down the road at Lymington, theres free parking with a great slip and also Keyhaven with plenty of free parking, and less fuel to burn to get to them winter Needles Cod. Dan Quote

Bob F Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 Dan You only need to buy 2 tickets if you keep the trailer attached to your car, and are therefore taking up a parking space. If you take the trailer off the car and put it in the trailer part, there's no need for the second ticket. BF Quote

Does the other slip up by the ship inn at Lymo ever get used? I know theres no trailor park, but is that free? Quote

hotshot Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 (edited) I just got back from hols in Florida and can't help comparing the issues raised on this thread with what I observed (again) there. As an example, part of my last but one evening this trip was spent at Coquina Key (near Sarasota) watching boats setting out/ returning to a lovely FREE boatramp, (concrete slip with wooden jetties either side, complete with bait-cutting areeas with washing facilities). It had a huge amount of FREE parking for both cars and trailers. Nicely kept toilets nearby, along with covered seating areas with tables/ benches, some with barbecue facilities for FREE use (polite notice to clean up after you). Drinking fountains nearby, also a few swings/ slide and climbing frame for kids. A notice board nearby explained speed restrictions and fishing guides (minimum sizes etc) and provided a momofilament disposal point and large roll of plastic tear-off bags for garbage disposal. Quite apart from the palm trees, sun (and clear, warm water!) it made you kind of think that they really welcome boating/ fishing tourism.... Sure they may give up a few bucks on parking/ launching charges - but think how the local hotel/ motel/ restaurant/ chandlery/ tackle & bait etc businesses must benefit (it was our sixth visit this year, so that says something!) Anyone from Lymingon/ Christchurch/ Bournemouth/ Poole councils viewing and care to comment? I won't get into the lower prices, lower taxes and fuel costs etc... (sob!)
