Mikey B
Hello, I have a Garmin 188C /Map Colour Sounder. I
Paul J
Mikey, I believe the 50hz is used mainly for deeper water and has a wider cone for covering more area, the 200hz gives you better definition but covers a smaller area. Most people just use the 200hz setting PJ
plaicemat
On my garmin 250 fishfinder, I use a split screen display and have 50mhz on one screen and 200mhz on the other, thus giving the best of both worlds (I believe, waiting to be told differently). I don't know if you can do this on a combined unit. Terry.
Paul D
Mike, I have the same model but in mono The range setting is usually fine left on auto. However, you can get a double echo often which means the setting defaults to the wrong depth showing two "bottoms". Mine seemed to work OK until I fiddled with the settings after Bob F gave a talk at the club
Mikey B
Thank's, Paul. I think I'll leave well alone. Just stick with the default settings. Electronics are not my best subject and I still have a lot to learn. Many thanks Mikey B
Bob F
Mikey Your unit will work just fine with it set at 200MHz and auto ranging. There's really no need to use 50MHz in the Poole Bay area 'cus it's too shallow to make use of it. It can come in useful when trying to locate a small mark like a wreck, where the wider cone helps you intially spot the wreck. But then you need to swap to 200MHz to get a precise location. plaicemat
Which is where the split screen setting comes into it's own. I picked up on that one at the boat show this year from the Lowrance expert, very good advice. Terry.
