Swainiac
Mark and I managed a few hours out on Nipper, launching from Lymington. A few other PBSBAC members were there, all with their own ideas on how to bag the elusive nodder. Our plan, which turned out to be the general one, was to hiy the area south of the needles, and hope the weather settled. No way hose........we got out in the midst of the car park, and the sea was pretty rough, the charter skippers reporting most crews were groundbaiting! We sat it out hoping the flood would improve affairs, and bring a cod or two, alas only doggies, and a building sea, and increasing wind. We sat it out until the start of the flood, but decided to move when it hit about a force six! We moved inside the Solent, not far from where Adam caught the club stinger record, and sat it out there. Holding bottom was hard, all boats around us seemed to be tripping anchor. We did manage a bit of fishing, and Mark was soon rewarded with a fish, a cod of just under four pounds, albeit a weigher. He also squeaked out a bonus Bass, of around the five pound mark, which was duly released. The day ended with a meagre tally of fish, although at least we didnt blank. Back in Poole, he faired a tad better, managing seventh overall, not bad out of 181 entrants. So PBSBAC got onto the prize table again, well done Mark, and well done Gordon on Fugazi. We also had a turn up on the draw.......a couple of rods, and a new landing net...............that can stay in the wrapper!! Well done to all PBSBAC members who roughed it. Tight lines for 2007...............Rich
Gnasher
well done to the crew of Nipper again, you boys seem to be flying the flag for the club lately. Its a shame the conditions were poor because I think if everyone had sat it out and fished hard at the back of the IOW then there would of been more caught im sure. There does seem to be more fish around this year though. The 2 I had the other day had no sprats in them, just full of crab which could mean there feeding hard on the bottom. Well done Rich and Mark Dan
Bob F
Mark's into the cod again, eh? Must be those female pheromones he swears by. Well done for all the crew on Nipper and Fugazi for sticking it out and getting into the prizes. Better than the frustrating day I had at home wishing I'd gone out. Paul D
Posted this elsewhere - but seems better place here :- 2 club members got amongst the prizes, unfortunately, I caught my cod a week too early Gordon Holt on Fugazi and Mark Bessant on Nipper had cod which with only 9 fish weighed in put them amongst the prizes on offer, so an Abu Elite for Mark Bessant and an Abu 7000 for Gordon were well worth fishing for. ( Apologies to anyone else who may have been a winning club member that I havent recognised ). Rich managed to spawn a raffle prize of a fishing Rod which he kindly gave to Dave who had been fishing with Duncan. I managed to blank and Mike caught a solitary dogfish. Neo's trip started off at Lymington and we headed for the needles "car park" escorted by Nipper. The bridge was "interesting" and dropped anchor on the mark we had waves of around 6 foot ( Nipper anchored nerby kept disappearing ). Fished the start of the flood and nothing showing - wind picked up, so decided to head for the shelter of the solent. 26 knots cruise through the Solent and off to "mark2" where agter a while we met up with Gastronaught, Nipper and Fugazi. 4 attempts to hold anchor, then re-anchored alongside Fugazi where Gordon hauled in a codling almost as soon as we had stopped. Left at 3:20 and retrieved boat, off to home to drop off boat and then a dash to the weigh-in to see if we could have made it ( and we would have ). Excellent spread of prizes available and well worth fishing for ( with unclaimed prizes being raffled off ). Congratulations to Andy Robbins and Poole Sea Angling Centre for a superbly run competition.
Coddy
So what was the winning fish weight? Did it come from the Needles area? Coddy
Mike Fox
Top three cod were all 12-pounders. It was a lumpy day on the Needles car park, which I thought was only borderline fishable. Comp or not, it was hard to keep balance, bait up, move around the boat etc, and standing up to reel in was very difficult. We stuck it out an hour or so after change of tide, and that was more than enough for me! Knowing that Paul had caught his 21 pounder there made a visit worthwhile, but no longer roughing it after the wind went up another notch was a good decision by Paul. It clearly wasn't going to improve much ! The second mark actually gave us as much chance to get on the prize table (as Mark and Gordon ably proved), but it was definitely a 2lb lead spot. The 6 squid baids threaded up the lines might have proven a bit challenging for the codling, but both Paul and I did have a couple of bites which frustratingly failed to develop. A great day out Paul - thanks for the offer of place! Hard to believe that 40 HP could give such a performance in the Solent! Mike
