great white Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 Not arguing with that Pete "Providing the anchor and chain are up to the job" is the essential bit IMHO was just advising that half a coiil or less may be too short if combined with light chain and anchor in depths over 100ft Bigger anchor and heavier /longer chain is the other option of course. How are the boat building projects going Charlie Quote
Mike Fox Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 Hmmmmm a couple of interesting points raised here.... I would suspect that most WAFI's would prefer to be termed "sailors" Mike. I know you use the term tongue in cheek, but others appear to have real dislike of sailing boats. I suspect this stems from yachts not keeping a good lookout under their sails, and passing too close whilst angling boats are drifting or anchored. Also, not being aware of what all the tacking back and forth business is all about, while a yacht is operating in "environmentally friendly" mode, and being unable to sail closer than around 45 Quote
duncan Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 oh goody it's developed into an anchoring thread resisting the obvious temptations I will pick Mike (as always) Or are you saying the ratio is not constant and that the greater the depth over say 60ft the ratio needs to be extended? I find that in 60 ft 3 to 1 is fine it's actually the other way round Mike - as the depth increases the angle of pull exerted on the anchor by the rode can be maintained with a decreasing scope. In addition swell height, or even waves and wash, will deliver a lesser impact and require less contingency in your scope. Finally the height of your anchor roller to sea surface will be less significant (and most people talk/work around scope as a pure function of depth). The last 2 are minor contributory factors - the first is quite significant; 3:1 in depth over 30m should work fine but may not hold in exactly the same conditions in 10m depth. Quote
Afishionado Posted January 18, 2007 Author Report Posted January 18, 2007 Mike F, Heaven forfend that I should upset you ..(I know you use the term tongue in cheek, but others appear to have real dislike of sailing boats) But I do really hate some of the pillocks!!! Why when they see a fishing boat at anchor in an empty vista of blue sea to the stupid bastados feel the need to cut right accross ones stern within 20 ft OR better still when you have trolling lines out. I know you as a fishing Sailor would never do that but there seem to be hundreds of sailors that use a stationary fishing boat as a turning mark! WHY!! Is it that some force majeure that afflict those that are wind bourn? Mad Mike PS this year armed with a catapult and a bucket of cockles! Quote
Mike Fox Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 Nice one mike! Never thought of the turning mark idea! Suggestion for name for the new boat "Gybe Mark" ? Mike PS Try the cockles in a Thai Green curry sauce.....mmmmmmmmmm Quote
great white Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 Mike F The spots we look for off anvil point are 36 to 42 metres deep therefore if the tide is running and to be sure the metal bites a long warp is required. A nice day and neap tide 3:1 would work but that is still over 100 metres of warp. loads of members have failed to get their anchors to hold when trying to fish these marks without sufficient size of anchor, amount of chain or length of warp. Ask the lads from Burnham, they tried to share marks and failed due to mud anchors and short warps Mad Mike We can not paint all Yachties with the same brush But i am sure more members have been cut up or crowded out by a Yacht under sail than have returned the favour. I will not elaberate here, but they do not like fisheads in their sails even if they were close enough just to lob them in as the sailed past my anchored boat 2 miles out. charlie Quote
