Coddy
Be warned! ------------------------------------ Quote:- I have it on good authority from enquiries made by staff at MWH that there are now small undetectable specs cameras (average speed detection cameras) sited in both the north and south bore of the Blackwall tunnel. Apparently they are going live today. The speed limit for the tunnels are 30mph northbound and 40mph southbound. It would appear that Marlowe house have no knowledge of this and state it is TFL that have implemented it. Any offences for speeding through the tunnel would be raising funds of Edited January 16, 2007 by Codfather

Swainiac
I may be missing something here, but under the Road Traffic Act, dont notices have to be placed before areas covered by speed cameras, before summonses may be preffered?? Exactly the same as covert speed traps that are challenged in Magistrates usually get overturned?? Rich
Coddy
Hi Rich The quote came from the Met Police who say that no sign = no points BUT will get fine! The Tunnel is owned and maintained by the Mayors office, good old Ken!!! Coddy
Paul D
or is it another case of. "A unnamed source said ...." Plenty of these stories in circulation, such as the covert speed traps measuring average speed in the M27....... There again I could drive through the tunnel and be made to eat my words. Swainiac
There was a stated case when a local police authority had to refund monies collected from hundreds of motorists, and clear points annotated to licences, because guidelines had not been corectly adhered to regarding signing before a speed camera. It was a southampton solicitor, Barry Culshaw, who was the successfull solicitor concerned in overturning these allegations/enforcements. Member Removed
The speed on my navman is lower then the speed shown on my instrument panel in the car. Now we've all seen the big white spots on the motorways set at a 1/4 of a mile, this is so your speed can be watched from a satellite and your speed average taken between the two white spots on the motorway. I don't think It's up and running yet, but if a satellite is used to monitor your speed, then we should be able to drive at the speed the satnav is showing at the time, as it uses the same satellites that would be used to check your speed. I wonder if you could argue this case in court. Best Wishes Tony
Paul D
The speed on the instrument panel of your car is deliberately lower than the true speed. Otherwise, you could be driving along at 30 MPH shown and get done for speeding at say 33 MPH and you could blame the car company.
Swainiac
Tony, the markers on carriageways are placed in prominant speeding areas, to allow "following" police vehicles, either marked or unmarked, to use the callibrated intstruments on board to callculate speed over a set distance, between the two markers, thus challenges to set distances, ie the shadow of a bridge over the motorway, or a sign post on the side of the road, are no longer acceptable in court following so many bad convictions overturned on appeal. These markers can also be used by Police aircraft, both rotary and fixed wing, but I dont think that the local authority budget stretches as fars as surveillance from beyond the troposphere. plaicemat
I understand, Tony, that the sat nav speed is pretty damn exact and that all speedos on cars are optimistic. My Disco says I am doing 76 when the sat nav says 70 and the Mazda, 75. I wonder if there have been any cases of people challenging speeding offences when their sat nav said they were going slower at the time they were zapped. Terry. Newboy
Most cameras also have painted dash on the road, all the need to do is count the dashes and work out how fast you are going.
