jack
Andy and I set out in total calm on Sunday morning from Cobbs.Passed an apropriatly attired gent fishing at anchor from a Kayak in the run down to the Bridge. Out across the harbour with only one other boat on the move.Glassy conditions. This is it,we thought, never mind worming in the harbour, distant horizons for us. Out to Old Harry,wonderful...3 mile beyond a little chop on..,4mile out slightly wobbly,. 5 mile from Harry, definitely livelier..7 mile and on the mark, gusty, and lumpy.Anchored up,good big baits down and find something to hold on to !.Boat rolling well in North westerly cross wind easily 4 and rising.Good bite on one rod but jammed in and had to break out [after a struggle] should I put a weaker link in somewhere?.50lb braid and 100lb trace. In the next hour a couple more bites,2 doggies. Now the wind is coming in large gusts, actually knocking the boat sideways, and there is white tops and blown spray.God knows whats happened to the weather [ he should,as he's controlling it ].we decide to move inshore and have to break out all four rods,[charming]. Luckily the good old Alderny system worked well and we head in,Cabin door closed and waves smashing over the bow.More like the North Atlantic than Poole bay..Within 1 mile of Old Harry and we are settled again.Fished close in ,in a piddling tide with a variable cross wind ,and even the sea anchor could'nt keep us in a sensible stable positon. After 2 more little doggies we gave up and came in.Our kayak fisherman was now close to the chain ferry, and took the opportunity to hone his skills on our passing wake.If he had just asked me,I could have sent him where he could have got some good practice.Needless to say the flags at Cobbs were hanging limp against thier poles as we put the boat away.Oh well theres always next time. And Andy still thinks it beats working... jack
duncan
thanks for the thread of humour running through the report Jack - when I read the title of your post my first thought was Oh good Jack's catching conger, rays and cod like everyone else now.............. what ground were you fishing 7 miles off that was so bad you were getting snagged all the time? feel free to pm me the numbers as I am surprised - only area I can think of like that out there is the petrified forest area but that's pretty barren of fish. don't understand how you let a fish get the better of you with 50lb braid - wasn't a spinning rod was it? jack
Hi Duncan,I dont have the No.s here at home.I will note them when next on the boat..I did'nt,lose the fish as such,it got my lead or hook snagged in,and was tugging about at the trace end.We tried all sorts to free it,but in the end the braid snapped or wore through. The area we were fishing is proper Anchor losing territory. jack
