Rob
Hi - fished twice last week and manged two blanks. Hoping to make the most of new boat (new to me!!) this year with plenty of fishing - not the best start! I was hoping to find plaice off Boscombe Pier but spending a few hours drifting the only thing I hooked was half a dozon slipperlimpets! Tried anchoring of Fryers Cliff \ Highcliffe using squid \ sandeel and rag - nothing! I'm guessing from many of the posts here I should have fished the ledge! As I only have a 16ft open boat are there any more sheltered close in spots for the bream rather than a couple of miles out? Cheers Guys Rob PS - going to Padstow this week (not with my boat though ). I have booked a place on "The Blue Fox" - so far I am the only booking so unless others come forward it willnot be going. Has anyone fished out of Padstow before?
Gnasher
what boat is it? i fished the back of the needles codding on a little 14footer with no probs, and Alun used to take his 440 anywhere and everywhere!! You could of fished the ledge today from a lilo it was that calm!!! Obviousley know your boat and its limitations, but most 16footers would be fine on the ledge if the conditions are ok. (defo ok the last couple of days!) Edited April 16, 2007 by Gnasher
Rob
It is a Terhi "BigFun" (what were the Finns thinking of when they came up with that name!!). I guess she is a good sea worthy boat, it is a thing of confidence I guess! Also I take my wife most of the time and she doesn't mind bit of a chop but anchoring when it is uncomfortable is not her thing!! Plus I have already lost an achor in the ledge - I guess I need a different type - any suggestions? or should I not be anchoring on the rocks? Newboy
They are one of the best small boats around. It can handle most conditions you can throw at it inshore. Regarding anchor, what was it you lost? It pays to have the anchor tripped.
Rob
The anchor was of the folding type - 3 or 5 kg - tripped? Is that where the chain is attached to the "bottom" of the anchor and plastic cable tied to the top - if you know what I mean? Rob
Newboy
The folding anchor isn't very good, good enough only as a back up. Try getting a claw/bruce about
alun j.
Rob, With your size of boat, you can use a much smaller anchor; go for a 2 or 3 Kg 'Bruce' - style and trip it with 2 or 3 tiny little cable ties. This held my Orkney 4 40 quite easily when you add 4 or 5 m. of chain, and is much easier to haul back in. I fished and anchored the Ledge area regularly.......and sometimes you get the anchor 'stuck'. I lost 2 in 3 - 4 years of fishing trips [ first one was untripped and went in a few weeks!] Looks like a cracking little boat to get you out fishing quickly and easily; see you out there, Alun. Rob
Sorry to ask but am I looking to anchor uptide of the ledge - ie in the shallows (East side) on the Ebb and in the deep on the flood? Rob
Paul D
I think most people anchor right in the ledge itself but a tripped anchor ( ie. one set to trip ) is a must. I lost my first anchor on my first trip there. Learnt how tyo trip an anchor and ( tempting fate here ) haven't lost one since - although came close a couple of times
alun j.
Yep! .......... but it could be either or both! I look to anchor in 11 or 12 m. of water [ or more!] Be sure and have plenty of warp.... 50m. min. The easiest start is to get west of the Ledge on a gently flooding tide. Drop the anchor as the deep water comes up shallower in front of the rough ground. The anchor will go into sand and / or clay; you can pay out warp and fish back onto the rough and be confident of few probs, retrieving............just watch out for lines of pot gear near the buoys; these will usualy run in line with the tide [ E - W]. Paul J
Good move, it's got to be worth the cost oi an anchor PJ
jack
I have fished the ledge hundreds of times with my 16' longliner, with my wife most times. The anchoring was always the most worrying, until I had made up,A grapnel type anchor with 4 "spiders leg" type prongs [ in rod about a fountain pen thickness.each prong 18" long ] this held us in the strongest tides and was easy to motor out.It usually semi-straitened one of the prongs, and you just bent it back to shape for the next time.Hope this helps. jack
duncan
definitely the way to anchor such ground with a small boat - keep the bent bits quite long to both improve the holding and make it easier to bend out. don't bother to paint it orange - it will be very quickly!
