TomBettle
OK Guys I have been given the opportunity to fish out from Mindello on the island of Sao Vincent in the Cape Verde's next April. For those that don't know, Cape Verde lies about 6 hours south of here on the 25 degree of longtitude. The archipelago is volcanic and is made up of several islands, most inhabited. Cape Verde is about to move into a boom on tourism, but is a bit like the Canaries were 30odd years ago. Not quite there yet in terms of luxury hotels, but tonnes of potential. Cape Verde is officially the only place in Europe (albeit not mainland Europe) that is in the tropics. Fishing will be onboard Amelia, a new 36 foot Bertram, skippered by Zak, a captain of vast Big Game experience. He has offered the dates of 26th to 30th April 2008 to me and they are being temporarily held in his diary. April just gone, Zak had 104 Blue Marlin of an average size of 350lb running up to 750lb. This is utterly phenomenal statistics and for anyone who has spent literally days staring at the smoke trial of your "Pakulas" in the past, it is almost unheard of. More details about Amelia and Zak can be found at http://www.marlincapeverde.com Zak has offered me a special deal of Edited July 6, 2007 by TomBettle
Neal
You might like to consider an alternative - Along with a group of 5 or six others I have fished in the Gambia for the last two years. We have fished the in-shore reefs and around the mouth of the river Gambia. We had a poor fishing experience in January this year because we did not check the tides, however the people the week before us and the week after us did better. Speak to Ivan Wellington - Skipper of TomKat in Weymouth about his 150lb Tarpon - although it may have grown by now! The weather was superb - 22 - 28 degrees day and night and everything is ridiculously cheap. The weeks fishing accommodation food and lots of beer cost
Newboy
Even I have to say, 4k for 10 days fishing, that's bloody expensive. I might be mad, but I'm sure my other half will be even madder if I consider mentioning it ....

Afishionado
Quote...Ps We considered Cape Verde Islands ourselves for next year - but the cost put us off. We are going to Florida instead and will hire self drive boats. Neal, as far as I know you can hire self drive boats most places in FL but you are confined to the intercostal waterways and not alowed to take them into the open sea. If you find a self charter that does would you let me know please. Kam, in FL big boat charter (a Hatteras or similar) that will fish up to 4 good anglers or 6 pratts out for a trip, costs $750 a day + tips. Neal
Mike, Try this website http://www.keysrentalboats.com/ Boats up to 26ft with 6 people + tackle - twin outboards - looks plenty big enough to get to the local reefs and offshore fishing spots. See this months Sea Dangler for article by Roger Bayzand - looks similar to what we planned - but he had a skipper / guide all of which add a huge cost even at todays exchange rate. yes - I agree the big game option on Cape Verde is cheap - but from what I have read their is bugger all in the way of ameneties on the islands. ie hotels and restaurants. Mike Y
Tom I am very tempted to say "yes" as I think you have set up a superb big game opportunity which, although expensive, represents I am sure the very best deal possible. I am committed to a return to Namibia in 2008 (this time with the family) and Mrs. Y would kill me if I went off on another fishing holiday next year. Good luck with finding the remaining anglers - I look forward to seeing the pictures. PJ - the striper trips described on the BASS website have got my thinking in that direction too. I am off in September striper and bluefish fishing in NYC linked to a business trip but unfortunately I don't have time for a Montauk trip too. Maybe 2009.
