djredrupp
out today for anything that would bite a hook, took absolutely ages to get 4 maccy around poole patch, then over to the training bank, where we anchored inshore. bites on maccy fillets on 3/0 hooks, but no fish, so changed down to 1/0's, and still no success! then tried drifting down the bank back to the harbour with a dexter wedge and a rapala, still no luck! then tied up to the john lewis buoy, with a rapala going and maccy chunks on 1/0's, the occasional nibble, but no bites! finally to end the day we did a couple of drifts between the brownsea piers with a dexter wedge again, but caught nothing but weed! and lots of it! however the day did bring some questions for me... 1 ) whats the best way to hook an ammo frozen sandeel? and on what hooksize? (i tried the way they showed, on a 1/0, but it looked really bad....) 2) where are the fish lol Dan 2 ) where are the fish :{
duncan
oh dear - and I had the impression th ebass and rays were jumpin out the water now............. 1. depends on species and method but I cut of the head and tail then put a 1/0 semi circle through the tail root 2. no idea............. Paul D
Dan, We were out today and fishing was really slow to say the least. No bass found today. Had a couple take some interest but nothing caught. Mackeral were hard to find, had 3 all day. Dogfish were no problem and had just the one small small eyed ray ( est. 3 lb ) before deciding to up anchor before the tide turned to be wind against tide. ( Was around F3 to F4 and the tide was a big one, so looked to be getting quite lumpy ). Ah well, as Rich JAW once said to me, if it was that easy it would be called "catching" as opposed to fishing
alun j.
Rule of thumb.......... If you're not catching within an hour........ then move somewhere else [ unless there's a specific reason you can deduce, like tide flow etc.] Use decent size bait........and put in a few groundbaiting morsels. Be confident where you are and what you're doing. Think like a fish !!!

Mike Fox
Dan, It's been grim in the Poole area for us for a few weeks now. The number of rod-hours we've put in, and the number of marks we've tried now is getting rediculous. Yes, we've had fish, but we've had to work hard for them, and as Alun says - if they aren't there, you really have to move. Have tried well over a dozen marks in the last 4 trips, and none have produced consistently. Keep changing your tactics when on each mark, different baits, hook sizes, rigs, etc. Eventually, you'll get one, then all change to the winning formula, get a few to take, then experiment again to see what else is there. It's easy to stick with a simple running ledger and mackerel bait, but try variations if it doesn't produce. Have had real problems getting mackerel in the Poole area this year, and wonder if the apparent increase in motor boat and commercial traffic has made the difference? The charter boats are no longer fishing together on the same marks, and I suspect they're also scratching, waiting for the autumn fish to move in properly, and the fish to come properly back on the feed again to fatten up now for the winter months.. Stick with it, and your luck will turn! Mike
Rob
Maccy by the bucket load off Henisbury, Charlie and I were pulling them 4 at a time, my feathers have lost all their "feathers" just a tiny ring of red plastic and they still worked! Hey, we worked hard for our Rays! I've been out 8 or 9 times this year and this was the first time I have had to make a decision on whether I'd caught enough mackerel. But yeah, we caught our quota of macky on Friday, but they did go off the boil after a while. When the rays stopped biting, we moved back through the macky goldmine and didn't get a single bite... apart from our livebait which kept coming back to the boat to have a go at our feathers! djredrupp
thanks for the help guys! ill definately keep on trying! as for different tactics ive made a 3boom thingymajig to try next time, with 1/0's, so hopefully that will catch anything other than weedfish! alun - if youre getting nibbles, but no hookups, would you say it would be better to move after the hour or so, or stick to? Sinbad
Just returned from a week in sunny devon... watching the bass boats return most evenings with two boxes of fish full between 4-6lbs well over a dozen - caught on spinners, livebaits, running ledger - mixture of methods. Also managed to get off the beach in a self drive boat.. and was 'innundated' by shoals of mackerel, proving my theory about mackerel not being put off by the noise of a diesel engine clattering away. Where to go fish for the Burnham comp ?? Paul
Paul D
alun - if youre getting nibbles, but no hookups, would you say it would be better to move after the hour or so, or stick to? Can't speak for Alun, but personally I would try changing hook size down and maybe changing trace length first.
djredrupp
i changed down to a 1/0 (the smallest i had, other than some of those toy crab line ones... tempting) trace length??? Dan
JIMBOB
sounds like small bream biting to me, you would need a tiny size 4 or a carp hook if you want to catch them....... You best to keep with the 3/0, keep changing the bait and wait for something bigger to come and eat it!
great white
I am afaid its all part of the learning process Dan Try a variety of methods, baits etc in a known fishy area and success will come Its down to some luck, good bait, skills and Rod Hours My advice would be to keep trying, keep the rigs and tactics simple and persivere If you are in an area known for certain species, learn a bit about targeting that species and go for it Ie Xray Simple running ledger, 4 ft trace 40lb mono, 4/0 hook Fished hard on the bottom Whole squid, sandeel or half a mackeral fillet [cut longways] keep the baits fresh [new every 20 to 30 mins] and Rays should come amongst the doggies. Ignore the temptation to move away from the dogs and to change tactics target the small bait robbing fish, as that will weaken your chances with the bigger fish.
