Harry S Posted September 11, 2007 Report Posted September 11, 2007 I have looked on www.boatlaunch.co.uk at sites on the Hamble but am still uncertain as to the best or the most cost effective place to launch. I have a Warrior 165 towed by a 4x4. I'm looking for an alternative to Poole, Lymington and Christchurch as I live near Swindon and am getting fed up with all the driving! Any local knowledge would be appreciated. From available information on the internet, Hamble Point looks good. Am I right? Regards, Harry P.S. I am used to the excessive charges at Cobbs Quay but I do like the facilities and parking it offers. Quote
lady jane Posted September 11, 2007 Report Posted September 11, 2007 harry, hythe has a lovely slip and good parking, i think its Quote
Swainiac Posted September 11, 2007 Report Posted September 11, 2007 Harry, take it from a local, launching from Lymo is by far the better option against the Hamble. You still have a fair old steam to get to decent fishing grounds. I would stick with Lymington and either Poole or weymouth. These launch sites far out fish either of the Hamble slips. Rich Quote
Rob Posted September 11, 2007 Report Posted September 11, 2007 With a 165 you might just get away with launching on the Hamble behind the Ship Inn. I have launched my old Dory 13 and current boat 16ft Terhi there. Even with a lowish tide the slip is compacted gravel and you can go out a long way. I used to launch by hand and use a 10m rope to retreive though! Plus free parking at the top of the slip. Warsah could be more suitable for bigger craft + you are nearer the mouth of the river so save 20 mins motoring. And it used to be free parking in the carpark 500yds round the one way system. Having not used them in a couple of years things could have changed! Rob Quote
Swainiac Posted September 11, 2007 Report Posted September 11, 2007 Rob, Andy, agreed the slips are either cheap or decent.......the fishing grounds in a resonable steaming distabce are pants!!!! You may as well launch down magazine lane in marchwood and try for late small rays or soles........or early flatties. Fishing there is dire compared to other areas!!! Trust me! Rich Quote
TomBettle Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 Hi Harry I used to live in the tiny cottages behind the Ship Inn. My back garden was the slipway and given practise, it was a dead easy one to use. Word of warning though.... Do not stray either side of the gravelled slip. On one side is a steep drop and the other side is very thick deep mud. We've managed to lose a few trucks in the mud and needed several pick ups and a tractor from Moody's to pull cars out in the past! Best launch times are either right at low water when the slip shelves off steeply or at high water. You can launch throughout the tide. Other slips include a realy good one at Warsash by the Rising Sun pub. This one is best at low water, but watch out at any state of the tide for the tide to cause you problems getting on or off the trailer. Directly opposite the Warsash slipway is Hamble Point. A nice, managed, concrete slipway that is easy to use. It does cost something like Quote
Seamouse Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 Coming down from Swindon, launching from Camber Dock or either of the two Langstone Harbour slipways would also be an option. You can range from the eastern back of the IoW across to Selsey Bill. PM me for details, not expensive to launch and park. Come to that, I'm out tomorrow and currently crewless if you want a guided tour. Steve Quote
Harry S Posted September 12, 2007 Author Report Posted September 12, 2007 (edited) Thanks for all your advice. Seems I should get up earlier and stick with Lymington & Poole! But then again I may have to sell the boat or move closer to the sea. Anyone interested in a Warrior 165? All the best, Harry Edited September 12, 2007 by Harry S Quote
