Chopping Board

Fed up of having to cut up bait on the lid of a small bait bucket I decided to make a chopping board for JoJo. I have seen some boats with boards that slot in to rod holders on the transom. Having a bench seat infront of the transom this was not an option.

With a small boat where space is at a premium I decided that an over the side board was the way to go. Therefore I made a board to clip on to the side rail of JoJo.

Materials I had were:

3 plastic chopping boards from Wilko

1 Stainless Hinge from B&Q

Numerous pan head SS screws

Countersunt bolts and nylock nuts

Silicone sealant

22mm Pipe clips

The board is held on to the rails with pipeclips and currently the leg is held in position on the rubbing strip with a bungee. It also had to fold flat to store due to space limitations!!

After testing on Sunday the only mod I will make is a full lip along the outer edge (as suggested by Paul Rowcliffe) as frozen baits tend to slide around! (The lip will be raised to allow juices to wash out underneath.)

That looks brilliant Rob, really well thought out, and I bet there's quite a demand for them!

Carol bought a plastic tray for my chopping, but while it does what's needed, it's nowhere near as elegant!

Suggestion - a vertical slit or three in the edging would be a way of storing a filleting knife without it rolling off in a choppy sea?

Nice job Rob

Looks durable and very easy to clean

I had a wooden version on great white, that had to be kept varnished so it could be cleaned

I found having it angled down to drain the blood over the side usefull and a short strip on the top of the board [pack out with washers under ends] that the knife blade slid under kept them on the board and safe. I worry a bit about knives sticking down through slots as the blades extend under the board.

When can I order one for Alfresco?

certainly a masterful feat of engineering!

whilst we seem to be sharing collective wisdom ( rolleyes.gif ) on bait boards I would suggest that a centre section be added, about the size of a mackerel, that is flush height with the edging. this makes it much easier to fillet bait (and possibly smaller catch like whiting) cleanly.

we have a raised edge board and it's a right pain to get your wrist down to the level of the cut. our current practical solution is to fill the board with removable cutting boards to the height of the surround but if I was starting from scratch I would permenantly fix one in the middle of the arrangement flush with the edging.

do others see it the same way?

I can see an "Ultimate Baitboard" competition coming here...with Rob in the lead at the moment....!

I like Charlie's idea of a knife retainer much better than mine!

Mindy ou, instead of blood draining over the side - why not have an optional draining tube, so that groundbait enhancing liquid flavouring can be drained into a convenient bucket?

Duncan I know what you mean about the edges, GW were only about 10mm high but still a little awkward, although I think the board was large enough to use the center for tricky jobs.

Mike I have seen boards in NZ that had drains running through hoses to the groundbait tubes on the stern, effective but tricky to clean and stow

I just chopped the groundbait on mine and let the blood trickle off over the stern.

If in shallows i just pushed the groundbait in from the board little and often.

down side the bait can follow the same route.

I am sure Bob F can remember us losing all our worms that way on a Club comp ph34r.gifweep.gif
