duncan
Terry The 790SW is an excellent toughie, and a lot better image quality than the 720/730/770SW range it replaces. I have been using a 720SW for some time, including underwater and literally chucked around in the cockpit. Yes there are better picture quality cameras in the proce range, and yep the XD picture card memory isn't as good as SD cards but you get a seriously tough camera and stick a slick skin on it for the extra protection. I can't lend you the 720 to try as it has gone with Josh in his backpack for 6 months in Aus and NZ. and that's a good deal on it.......... plaicemat
Hoorah! I've selected something that others agree might be o/k. Thanks for that input, Duncan, it's now added to the Santa list. Terry.
Bob F
One thing to be a little careful of with this type of camera is that they do not have a lens cover. Even though the lens area is relatively small you need to ensure it doesn't get scratched when you are "throwing it about". And wipe any water droplets off the lens before taking a photo! (unless you want some neat distortion effects).
jack
Would you belive it ! all this publicity came to light the day AFTER I bought myself a new camera [sony DSC-W55 ] It seems fantastic compared to my previous Olympus C765 Which at the time was state of the art for its price. This newly aquired item however bears all the usual warnings about Knocks and damp and Sun and Sand....It just goes to show that Technoligy often moves faster than ones ability to pay for it...Ah well ,how to convince her indoors how important it will be for me to upgrade in the summer. jack

In addition the lens is sufficently recessed (and small) to be better protected than my DSL lenses with their hoods. Finally we have never wiped the lens, and never had any distortion effects either - but we do give it a rinse off under the tap and a good shake after UW trips in salt water. Above is 720SW (same as the 725/730/770) and I believe will apply equally to 790SW although the body has small changes in construction as well as updated software. Ah, well Duncan, that'll be the difference between your Olypmus and my (the wife's, actually) Pentax Optio, then. It doesn't have a lens cover, and we've got the photos to prove that it takes great photos of water droplets. BF
duncan
Optio has SD card which is better, and the image quality was better than the 720/770 range but the 790 is a lot better
Rob
Jack, I have the Sony DSC-W55 and the waterproof case Sony SPK-WA. Bloody brilliant. I found the tough cameras all had a compromise on some features, weatehr it be small lens, no AF Assist etc so I went for the W55 as the case is
