charlieannear
A big thanks to Bob, Dave and all others who helped me get Star Turn off the trailer at Baiter yesterday morning. The jockey wheel failed on the driveway at about a quarter to 8 and I had to use a trolley jack and bricks to get hitched up to the Pajero. That meant that I couldn't unhitch the trailer from the Paj when I got to the slip. With the water about as low as it gets there, I struggled to get in deep enough to float the boat off the trailer (I don't think Dave realised it sits on bunks not rollers when he started pushing! Something else to sort at some stage) without also having water coming in the doors on the Paj! Anyway following a great deal of heaving the two were seperated, so again a big thanks to all involved. Now, I have new jockey wheel to sort out- any reccomendations?

Paul D
Charlie, I wondered why everyone was talking about your Pajero having water up to its doors. Now I know !

Rob
Charlie, Get the pneumatic one, they don't stop on small stones or gravel like the hard ones. I know you have a lot of weight on the nose of your trailer so maybe it would be worth finding out how much weight they can take! Also, get a hitch stand for ST when on the drive to take the weight off the J Wheel. Rob

Rob Yep, I've been looking on Indespensio site (we get club discount) and had the pnuematic one in mind as the old one was rigid plastic and always getting stuck. Indespension site also gives 'weights' for the assemblies. It's pretty much a two person lift to get the jockey wheel off the ground- what weight do you reckon I should go for? Rob
Nose weight depends on your towing vehicle! Nearer to its limit the better. Mine is set to 60\70kg ish as at 90kg (my cars limit) is SO heavy. Can you shuffle ST back on the bunks and move the winch post back? I know you can't move the wheels easily because of the bow in the trailer. Could you get round this some how? I'm sure if we put our heads together and have a few beers we could come up with a plan! charlieannear
Yeah, I know that (there have been MANY discussions on the forum on that topic ) and on that basis the nose weight is fine as I tow with HMS Pajero. What I mean is, do the jockey wheel weights on the Indespension site describe the weight they'll 'lift' or the weight/class of the trailer that they suit? Winch post is already as far back as it'll go. Really, it's a bit too small. It could be modified, with a grinder, a welder and some steel, resulting in the hull sitting further back on the trailer. ST can be lifted on 2 trolley jacks and her position adjusted on the trailer (been there, done that). The axle can't go any further forward as it is a fixed type with leaf springs, i.e. not held on with U-Bolts. Moving the leaf spring hangers would involve lots of grinding and welding, which would knacker the galvanisation in those areas. If I'm honest, the trailer is a bit too short, but changing it isn't really an option! Meant to say, when I'm not expecting to use it for a while (hahaha) like now (no jockey wheel and poorly motor and too bloody cold) I use axle stands to keep the tyres off the ground. I can then spin them occasionally, service the bearings and brakes relatively easily, and inflate the tyres more easily. I agree, I need to get another set of axle stands (cheap as chips but perhaps not stable enough), or manufacture something to support the hitch end and thereby take the strain off the jockey wheel. Isn't boating fun!
Rob
Those weights Indespension must be trailer capacity. This site suggests their Pneumatic JWheel can take 75kg nose weight: http://www.autow.co.uk Have a chat with Paul J, I think his trailer is too big!! Coddy
Charlie Check out Towsure http://www.towsure.com/category/7250-Teles...c_Jockey_Wheels or http://www.trailerpartswarehouse.co.uk/tra...keys_props.html or http://www.western-towing.co.uk/acatalog/J...els_Clamps.html Max load for the Paj is 100kg on the tow ball but will take some lifting by hand! Suggest around 75 - 80kg would be better. If you have a keel band nylon rollers help but as they are so hard if the boat bounces it can damage the keel. Crayside sell them http://www.craysidemarine.co.uk/ look under the menu of "Specials" to read about it. Hope the above helps Coddy
Gnasher
I may also be looking at a price to replace mine as it is pretty knackered and bent after getting caught on the lip of the slip at muddeford whilst roping it out. I was very impressed with trailer tek and would highly reccomend them. (thanks for suggesting them Rob and also thanks to Gorden for an alternative option when i was after a pair of suspension units). They offered free delivery for purchass over
Wedger
You probably all know this but for the benefit of the few.......... Roping out over bumpy ground is best done with the jock lifted right up thus dropping the nose of the trailer. Atach the rope by means of a loop passed around the back of the jockey wheel, under the trailer frame then over the jockey stem to secure. Any bumps and the tightening rope tends to lift the nose over the bump as it straightens. Will also prevent bending the jockey stem. On very rough ground, better with someone with a hand on the bow to steady the boat.

charlieannear
Hi PJ I appreciate the idea, but I think you might be getting the rough end of a swap. Still, if you're serious I'll be at the meeting tonight!
