Member Removed Posted December 18, 2007 Report Posted December 18, 2007 Hi all had a cod with a tag this is the report on it........... Report from the tag (CEFAS) the FVHalycon was chartered between January and February 2007 to work off the southern coast of england to carry out a series of FSP surveys of cod in the eastern channel, with the aim of identifying important locations for spawning cod and determining post-spawning migrations. In all,229 mature cod(>50cm) were tagged with plastic markers tags ( Howitts) and released in the vicinity of there capture. The mean length and weight of released cod was 66cm (+_ 7.50 cm) and 3.9kg (+_1.33kg) respectively. Additionally 104 cod were dissected to determine maturity etc. Although as much information as possible was gathered to map the fishing area (seabed type, maturity, sex, stomach contents and age) confirmation of the existence of spawning aggregations proved inconclusive at this early stage. It was not possible to determine whether the cod caught in the fishing area constituted a group composed of many distinct individuals, or simply if the cod were migrating through the area. Released 30-1-07 tag No 939035 50 46 290 N 0 38 056 E Eastbourne length 68cm weight 3.8kg Caught 12-12-07 needles length 78cm weight 13lb 10 oz Few other bits of info says that ............ A minimum length of 50cm will ensure that all cod tagged will be mature fish capable of spawning. looking on the chart of there stomach content 90% of them have crab in them. Quote
Paul D Posted December 18, 2007 Report Posted December 18, 2007 Very interesting the way the cod has moved west. The report is here by the way :- Final Report Quote
Paul D Posted January 4, 2008 Report Posted January 4, 2008 Trevor ( Wedger ) has been in correspondance with the CEFAS guy with regard to this and there is a reward poster and apparently this is the the time of year they get the most returns. They will also pay the market value for the fish itself. Quote
