Mike Fox
Sounds a well planned trip with a huge variety of bait. Could I just ask you to check the identity of the ray again carefully? I've had Spotted Ray from where you stated, but have never seen Thornbacks that small in that area. Just to add to confusion, if you change your mind and decide it wasn't a Thornback, just check if the spots go to the edges of the wings - because a small Blonde Ray and a Spotted Ray are also hard to tell apart, and this is the distinguishing characteristic. Fishing is fun isn't it? Oh - and all three have "thorns". Perhaps one of the other members could pop the link to the Ray Identification guide on here. I printed it last year, and can't find the link. Thanks! Mike

Afishionado
Quote.......Do you know anbody who knows any thing about how much ballast a displacement boat should carry ? That'll be a can of worms There are going to be several or even many answers. To give you a better chance of getting an answer that actually has any relevance to what is needed, it would be best to give a lot more detail about the craft you are talking about together with the nature of its use. (trailed or moored?) A trailered craft would have the minimum needed, nothing like as much as the ideal amount a moored craft would have. Also it would help if you stated the reason you asked. Are you thinking of a specific problem, like a boat that is tender as hell and rolls on wet grass? There is no such thing as too much information, so if you can fill in the blanks you'll get something like an accurate answer. gaffa
Many years ago I had access to a few fishing trips aboard a friends converted ships lifeboat. It was manufactured from aluminium plate around 30 odd foot long and designed to take around 60 people. So with just 3 of us aboard and mininal ballast it was an unbelievable Roller. I can remember us adding ballast to it every weekend to try and improve the ride and I think we got 3 tonnes into her over time but with no real improvement. Thinking back it would seem that 3 tonnes should have been the starting point- 60X60KGS (PER PERSON) =3600TONNES We could never get her to sit low enough in the water and with a top speed from her little diesel engine of 4 knots getting through the 7knot harbour entrance current was always an experience. Ah the good old days........NOT
