Tarpon (Yes TARPON) in Wales

Hi

I've got myself all excited after reading this months Sea Angler in which Dave Lewis reveals that there is a breeding population of Tarpon, yes Tarpon, that have been discovered around the area of the Aberthawe Power Station.

Allegedly they have accidentally found themselves is the water system around there and are now living very happily in and around the area due to the warmer, food rich, waters that are as a result of the power station.

I am looking to charter a small boat (skippered or self drive) to explore the area towards the end of May.

Does anyone know of anyone chartering in the area or maybe fancy a rail away for a few days?

I'd love to be the first angler to hook and land a UK Tarpon, so does anyone (between another 2 and 4 anglers max) that fancy doing some research with me?

Cheers

Tom

Tom,

I suggest you may not want to get too excited - just yet

The last three years fishing in Gambia have failed to produce a Tarpon - they are wily creatures.

Good hunting - and enjoy your trip later in the week - look forward to seeing some pictures.

I am not expecting it to be easy Neal.

I'm sort of mates with Dave Lewis the writer of the feature and he knows the area and score far better than me,

He suggests that as the fish are in such a small overall area we have a truly real chance of success.

Uptide gear, large fixed spools, with crabs under bubble floats is apparently what we need.

Along with a big spring tide where the main run of water is around dawn and slack is 8am ish.

I'd be up for a trailaway or charter.

I've even got a small electric outboard we could use for stealth.

Anyone fancy joining me?

Tom

PS: Cheers for the mention on my trip this week. Any report and pictures on Gambia?

Tom, Tom, Tom, oh dear,

April 1st laugh.gif

I phoned the tourist board just in case to make sure i wasn't being mugged over (vain desperation and hope!!) they didn't have a clue what i was talking about and they checked with all the correct depts just to be sure.

If it was true i would be the first one out there with you, but alas!! weep.gif

I remember you ate the last large herring like fish landed in Poole

I hope you exercise catch and release this time

especially if its one of bob's that takes your bait

The crabs love the warm water around Hinkley point power station so if Tarpon love warm water and crabs MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Tom,

I'll come with you - I've actually gone after Tarpon before - but it was from a helicopter in Central America and with a rifle! Massive great fish - however, we never got to weigh them as the crocodiles moved in too quickly. Don't expect that technique will go down too well with the Welsh Tourist Board.

Harry

P.S. How big are the crocodiles at Abertawe?
