Hi all hope everyones ok. Not been logged on for a while been really busy with wor and all that. I need to replace the prop on my Suziki 70HP outboard for my Warrior 165. At the moment we have a 3 blade 17" on there and are going to change it for a Stainless steel type. but can anyone tell me if i would be able to use a 4 blade instead of 3 and would it give me more power if i did.

Also while i am on the subject of props my mate who has an Avor 215as down at Thurrock has just taken his out the water after the first year and found that all the Anodes have gone which has ment that the prop has taken their place and as a result it has become very weak and part of it has broke of. I found out that the one on there is a Magnesium Ally bronze which is really cheap metal for props and that this type of prop is not ment to do above 14 knots. Have spoken to a few companies one of which we have ordered a new prop and the new prop type is a Nickel Ally Bronze which is ment to be much stronger. So we have replaced the anodes and checked they are connected to ground/earth and are waiting on our new prop. But someone tells me at the club to get a propeller guard for when we fit the new prop. I have searched the net and all i can find is rope/debis cutter for props. Can anyone tell me if there is anything different

what are you looking to do with the prop guard is it for safty?

 

or to protect the prop?

 

the anodes need changeing after three months if your near electical supply

 

at cobs i used to put a large anode over the side of the boat and useing a jump lead cable connect it to the prop shaft in means you have to leave the engine cover up but it does help

 

I fitted a four bladed prop to my boat and it made a lot of difference to the pick up

but little difference to top speed

 

yellow penguine boats at michelles boat yard might be able to help he also had to fit prop guards to the small boats he hires out

Be warned that fitting a s/s prop may give a slight performance increase, the down side is if you hit anything with the prop.

Aluminium props allow damage but s/s often transfer the damage to the gearbox/leg!

a little difficult as you are making many points or asking many questions at once.

 

as Coddy points out propguard is a physical device designed around swimmer safety primarily for small OB motors - not I believe what you are looking at here at all.

 

putting aside the actual metal of the prop a rope cutter of some sort is recomended not ot save the prop but to prevent the boat becoming disabled on shaft drive boats.

 

returning to your OB - manufacturers install 3 blade props for a reason - they are the best compromise available.

 

you can add a 5 blade to increase the hole shot, or a 4 which is often a little smoother running but neither is likely to add to the top end (unless you have the gearing wrong with the current 3)

Big notices around my Arvor say that anodes need replacing every 6 months - suggestion to your mate RTFM.

 

Whilst they have not worn completely away, they have been changed - now I am glad I have.
