Member Removed
hi all im having a bit of a problem with my electrics i have taken out all my electrics and am going to replace the whole system. im going to tell you my idea for replaceing the lot and wuld like to no if this is good or bad and of course safe so here goes. im want to run my bilge pump, 3 sets of running lights, small light in cabin, spot light on deck, vhf, fish finder, i am currently waiting for a answer from mariner to tell me if my 40hp outboard has a alternator or not. the way i want to connect all this is engine to battery then cut out switch, on to a fused switch board. and switch board out to lights etc etc is this a good idea ??? is it safe??? what do you guys think??? thanks james. duncan
James, Probably best if you get yourself a copy of the 12v bible by MK Brotherton (good cheap basic primer) or Motorboat Electrical and Electronics Manual by JC Payne (bigger!) In principle you will have engine starter direct to battery, auto bilge circuit direct to battery and everything else via a bettery isolation switch and then a fused distribution board for ancillaries. This is a huge generalisation. And why '3 sets of running lights' ?
Member Removed
sorry been so long to get back duncan am going to look them books up. i have only 3 running lights on not three sets my fault one on port, starboard and and on top of my cabin cheers james
duncan
just make sure you wire the port and starboard together and the all round white seperately. that way you can switch on the all round as an anchor light seperately or both switches on when running.
