Hi all. I am picking your brains again. We have had two unsucsesfull trailaways this year one to Scotland for the tope. and one to Ireland all small fish and blown off for two days. The swash didn't get a look in the shipping channel we had to run had two tides running and water over the cabin roof. Well as they say nothing ventured nothing gained. It's an adventure one of the lad's faverite sayings.

We are now thinking of going to Norway without the boats. prefer self drive boat We have been quoted

You don't need big boat to go miles out. In most places, you are in 300-400 ft within 10 mins motoring.

Problem with flying out is the limited luggage allowance, a few pirks+jigs and you are already over the limit. And SAS are very tight on weight, so expect to get stunk if you bring plenty of tackle. On the other hands, tackles are expensive over there, a chrome pirk can be 10-20 pounds.

When we were there, a group of german were there too, but they drove up there in 2-3 vans, plenty of tackles plus they take ALL their fish, filleted, frozen and then take home in iceboxes. So I suppose driving is viable if you are up to it. (didn't Jeremy Clarkson drive up to Finland/norway in a Mer 500SL or something in a day?)

There's another thread about Norway about a month or so ago, do a search, more info in that one I think.

Reg an Arvor 18 is going to be pretty tight with four of you aboard.

You'd almost be better off going for a smaller centre console style open boat, at least you would have room to breathe.

What Newboy mentioned about the Germans and their freezer vans is now, I believe, banned and I think there is something like a 25Kg limit on the number of fillets you can take home.

Even if not, I know the Norwegian guides really frown on those that are simply taking truck loads home.

Food and drink is silly money, so do eat what you catch and expect a dry week unless you bring your own in with you.

That's what I am doing, I am going in by boat and will have my supplies safely onboard.

Tom, are you going to Skerjeck (?) with your mate Dave Lewis?

If you are, are you doing self drive, Pendlar(big wooden boat) or Hugar's 30' boat?

I think we made the mistake of going on Pendlar, yes it can go out further on a rougher day, but Hugar's boat is much faster so less time travelling. Not to mention we were charged something like

I am hoping to be going several times in coming months and next couple of years.

Holger has sold his rib now as he has now got a new toy.

I am delivering it with him, leaving Poole on Sunday night to Arnoy.

I'll hope to be going with a number of people including Dave and will normally be aboard Troms Explorer, but I am now also involved with a couple of other camps that do self drive too.

Thanks for your input. Looks like flying is out as we allways take more than we need. So the most feasable way seems to drive. As there is four of us that drive that should be no hardship. Missed you at the London boatshow Tom could not find you on your stand. but don't think we will be going again as it's not for the little man anymore.

On one of my trips to Norway I travelled via the Newcastle-Bergen ferry as it was the best compromise for time and amount of kit. Not sure what is available now but it is worth shopping around for price as I got the trip cheaper via a Swedish ferry line than booking direct huh.gif
