Gnasher
I am off to spain next week and plan to do some carp fishing. I am only taking two rods on the plane, but the problem is trying to get a price from my airline for these. I am going with easyjet, from gatwick to valencia, but there is no contact number on there website and the nly way to get the info is via an online question, but im not getting any answers. I will be strapping 2 rod tubes together as one tube, and the tubes will be about 6ft long, a width of 8 inches and a diameter of about 4 inches. has anyone taken rods on a plain, and any idea how much the cost will be? Neal
I have taken rods on a plane many times - so far with no problems - and it shouldn't cost you any extra. Check your luggage weight allowance - and weigh the rod tubes with the rest of the luggage to make sure you don't exceed your allowance. Check in as normal and you will then be asked to take your rod tubes to the "oversized packages" area and the rods will be taken away and loaded separately. The same thing happens at the other end - you collect your luggage from the carousel as normal and then go to find where the oversized stuff comes in. It may take a little bit longer, but not much. Hope that helps and you enjoy your fishing in Spain Neal
great white
I took rods to NZ a few years back, I do not think it cost extra but I had to arrive early to book them in as oversize. I made up a large tube out of groundpipe, it is a bit heavy plastic but very strong. If you would like to borrow it to protect your rods, please get in touch. Rob
I would be suprised if Easyjet didn't charge more, I flew to Dublin with Flybe I think a few weeks ago and had to pay
britboard
I don't know why they call it EASY-jet, they will charge you without doubt, i would phone the airport and ask to speak to the easyjet desk if i was you as sometimes you will need to pre book any oversized luggage, the reason their flights are so cheap is that they fill the holds with cargo to keep the ticket prices down, so they are real strict on excess baggage. try to book them on as a set of skis as they are used to carrying those at a set price. OR buy or borrow some travel rods. Simon L

For most airlines (BA, Virgin, etc) the weight is included in the total allowance, but the total deminsion ie, w+h+d need to be under 2m or something. It should say in your paperless ticket. charlieannear
So thats why travel rods and tele rods are increasingly popular!
Gnasher
tele rods are no good for carping though, and the 4 piece travel rods struggle to fit into a suitcase. So ive opted for 3 long distance carp rods in a monstor tube.
conger king
if you go tompson no charge for over sized baggage
Freddie
Easy Jet will charge you!!! I work on the planes @ LHR & we do not charge but you MUST put them in some gutter piping as they may be thrown about or have something heavy placed on top. They will go into the "out of gauge" section of baggage if they are very long & will go to a separate area when you pick them up in Spain. (Just like snow skis) I use a telle rod on my trips for this reason but I do understand that they are not ideal. Good luck & let us know how you get on.
