Friday Morning

Don't know why I am posting this in Catch Reports - only mackeral caught today.

Got back from Ireland on Thursday having had 4 hours sleep, but the weather window looked so tempting this morning I just had to get out and checkout my recently serviced engine plus get some fishing in.

Mackeral were scarce - took me around an hour to catch 6 and chatting to Gastronaught I had apparently done well catching 6 of them in an hour !

Then set of on numerous drifts only to watch Alun J haul in a medium sized bass - but none for me today. I blame the mackeral, when you want Joeys all I could catch were huge ones !

Bit of drama as well, a boat radioed in that they had run over their anchor rope, so the lifeboat was called to tow them back in. I offered to tow the boat to Wick but fortunately the RNLI managed to free the prop by the quay ( I was much impressed with assistance they gave the vessel - diving under the transom to free the rope ).

Still, quite glad they got the rope free as this was one of those bigger Merry Fisher's so would have been fun towing her against the emptying harbour.

Still good to be out in such beautiful weather.

Must be the murky water !! I really struggled to find any quantity of livebait.

Going [a bit] further out didn't help ......the ones I got were scattered all over.

As Paul said, it was a beautiful morning, but didn't last as a freshening S. breeze got up before noon.

Three 'runs', two bass.....the better one went 4 lb. 4 oz.........cracking scrap on light gear......all around the boat [twice!]!

A different approach and a different venue will be needed over the weekend with the grotty weather due to come back!

Alun.

Just had a thought. If the RNLI had not managed to free the rope from the prop on the Merry Fisher, then we could have had a photograph of an E-Tec powered Orkney 520 towing a stricken Merry Fisher through Christchurch harbour biggrin.giflaugh.gif
