Paul D
All well and good and should be out fishing tomorrow afternoon. As I can only get out in the afternoon, I think it will have to be Lymington as the tide times for Christchurch would mean having to come back in late and Helen want to be back not too late. Anyone up for an afternoon trip ( 13:30 ish launch from Lymington ) ?
Newboy
Hopefully I will be out tomorrow, touch wood. The last time I said this and the main sprung a leak. I 'll be launching from warsach and will probably fish the west solent. May even see you out there, we're dead easy to spot, we'll be the one going round and round in circles..... Paul D
Sorry, I didn't get to see your last post, so didn't know what boat to call up. We fished Lepe ( right near the Beaulieu river entrance ) - saw one other boat fishing there. Not much success on the fish front, really got all the tides wrong, but as expected Helen did much better, starting with a Bass of 3 lb and then a Smoothhound. I had a solitary dogfish !! What type of boat is bosscat. I am sure we shall see each other out there sometime.

Newboy
Interesting day launching from warsash, considering it's my first launching. Reverse the trailer down the slipway, unwound the strip and nothing, a few hard push, nothing, 'maybe I need to get the boat a bit further down water' I said to myself. Off went another few feet into the water, now the tow bar is touching water. still nothing, then the other half noticed I'd forgotten to unclip the chain..... doh! At least not many people about and no one paid any attention to what I was doing or not in this case. We motored out off hamble, across to calshot direction, the outboard started to sound funny, struggling, on closer inspection there was no water coming out. Stop the engine and luckily we'd already crossed the shipping lane. I thought it might be the impellor, but that was changed when it was serviced 2 mouths ago. Changed over to the aux, didn't want to go too far cos it will take forever to come back. Parked/anchored up and not sure where we were exactly, but it was only in 6 feet of water and rising. fished for 2 hours and caught one bass about 1 3/4, lots of crabs. When I'd a minute, lifted up the main outbard and noticed some weeds straddled across the water intake holes, cleared it and it started without any problems, water jet fine, on way back. We did a little detour across the rivermouth and came back from near the Hillend. The boat did about 12mph (on the gps), so what's that in knots? Maybe the weed blocked out the water inlet and stopped water being pumped up?! Anyone had similar problems or not? I'll run the outboard for a few hours and see if it happens again. On retrieve, we came back too early and it was just after high tide and the slip is very boggy at the top, no choice but to push trailer out and rope it in. As paul D said, there are always audiences when things go wrong. Wind is northernly, slip is due east. So everytime I line up the boat, walk round to the front to wround it in, the boat is already been pushed out by the wind. Eventually after 4 attempts and a loud cheers from onlookers the boat is on the trailer slowly winched up, which was the easy bit . Afterward got talking to an old man, he asked me what boat was mine, he'd a sheltie and looked very much like mine except there wasn't much cabin in his one. I told him it is a Suntrip which is a variation of sheltie. He informed me the best time to launch and retrieve is 2-3 hours either side of high tide. All in all a fun packed day and will definitely do it again soon.
Bob F
12mph is just over 10knts. Yes, weed and other gunk is a common problem that blocks the water cooling inlets. Also, make sure you flush the motor with fresh water to prevent salt build up in the cooling system. Salt can often block the water outlet which stops the tell-tale or rooster showing. It's worth carrying something that you can poke in the hole to remove the salt if this happens. Bob F.
Afishionado
I am sorry I don't know if it is Ken, Kim, or Kam so forgive me for the more familiar 'Mate'. What you experianced was a NORMAL day out. In fact there are many of us who would say you did brilliantly well. The only difference is that with a bit more experiance you will come to EXPECT these events to happen and you will cope with them automaticly without thought Fishing wise be advised that I don't think there is a club record for 'caught' crab so I would claim it straight away Jokes apart I think you did great for a first launch. You had prob's but stayed calm and sorted them out........ WAY TO GO!!!!. Well done mate. Mad Mike
Swainiac
Paul, if you fish Lepe area again, try out the gravel bank area, just after the Cafe.......drift over it with ragworm, or jellies.............the bass lurk on the far side of it, and re dead easy to nab, only small stuff, around 3lb. Also, try the mouth of Beaulieu River, Seagull Island, there was a huge sole caught off there the other day, ounces short of the Brittish record, well worth a bash! Coddy
Hi Newboy, Also, make sure you flush the motor with fresh water to prevent salt build up in the cooling system. Salt can often block the water outlet which stops the tell-tale or rooster showing. It's worth carrying something that you can poke in the hole to remove the salt if this happens. I had a similar problem except I left the outboard in the 'down' position when I moored the boat overnight on a mud berth. The mud had clogged the intake and some had bits had blocked the "rooster" Best thing I found to use was my baiting needle, just the right size and nice and long to push and puggle around in the hole. As Bob said ALWAYS flush out the engine as soon as possible with FRESH water, this small job will save you
Newboy
Both engines flushed out as soon as I got home, one with a small dustgin and the other with an engine muff. Why? cos the 30hp won't fit in the dustbin and the 10 hp has a raised inlet which the muff won't fit . I jetted the boat and the trailer down, a power jet is wonderful in clearing bit of dirts of both boat and trailer.
Paul D
Boat was doing 15 knots with the new prop. Not too bad as we were two up and had a full load of fuel. Regarding launching / retrieving, we had a bit of fun retrieving at Lymington. It was low tide ( as in low spring tide ), so I reversed the trailer down the slip and had the rear car wheels in the water and the rear of the trailer was still well out of the water. I then waded over to the far side of the pontoon to get the boat. Water was knee deep. Pulled boat over and whilst I held the boat straight, Helen winched the boat up onto the trailer. This then caused the towbar end of the trailer to attempt to lift the rear of the car up, causing the car to edge backwards. To rectify Helen stood on the towbar end of the trailer. Given it was dead low water it wasn;t too bad really and makes a pleasant change standing on the end of the slipway which has not disintegrated. Come the winter ( in fact right now ), I will be launching from Lymington. I also intend to buy an annual permit (
Newboy
It's free at Warash, so is the parking. However, the slip isn't concreted as in Lymington, it's firm gravels. I didn't have [much] problems, other than avoid the high and low tide.
